14W APBI 398 – new course description!

The instructors for APBI 398 have updated the course description! This won’t be reflected in the UBC Calendar or Course Schedule just yet but we thought we would share with you beforehand what this course will really be about for the 2014 Winter Session:

APBI 398 Research Methods in Applied Animal Biology (3) 2014W Tu, Th 2pm – 3:30pm

An introduction to research for students in Applied Animal Biology. This course is intended to provide students a first taste of the research experience, by working with a researcher at UBC whose research involves animals. Previous students have worked on a variety of projects varying from marine mammal ecology to dietary preferences of bed bugs. In addition to hands-on research experience, students learn how to critically evaluate the scientific literature, write a research proposal, and give oral and poster-format scientific presentations.

Cultivating Portlandia: Urban agriculture and eco-gentrification in Portland, Oregon

Join us for a research seminar with Dr. Nathan McClintock of Portland State University.

Wed June 18
1-2:30 pm
MCML 258

Cultivating Portlandia: Urban agriculture and eco-gentrification in Portland, Oregon

Abstract: Portland, Oregon, is a city celebrated for innovations in sustainability and green infrastructure, including urban agriculture. In this talk, Dr. McClintock will present preliminary results of a mixed-methods study to evaluate the scale and scope of residential gardening and other forms of urban agriculture in Portland. Mapping and spatial analysis of over 3,000 home gardens reveal that reveal that the majority of gardens are concentrated in gentrified and gentrifying residential areas of inner Portland. Surveys of over 300 residential gardeners and 40 organizations reveal that many urban agriculturalists frame their efforts through the lens of sustainability and environmental concerns. In sum, the return of residential capital—and associated sustainability culture—to the urban core has, in turn, contributed to the displacement of poverty and people of color to suburban East Portland.
