Have you ever wanted to organize a successful event for incoming First Year students? Do you have the dedication and skills to lead a committee throughout 6 months of planning? Are you organized, responsible, and able to set achievable deadlines? If so , then apply to become 1 of the 2 LFS “Firsts” (Previously FROSH) Co-chairs!

Duties include: Head of the entire LFS FIRSTS 2015 event

  • Hire and lead a planning committee to organize and run FIRSTS 2014
  • Facilitate reimbursements and aid in budget management
  • Liaise with faculty and LFS|US to ensure successful execution of LFS FIRSTS
  • Recruit volunteers for the event
  • General management of volunteers
  • Be creative and HAVE FUN!

Volunteer Project Assistant Opportunity at Richmond Food Security Society

The Richmond Food Security Society is currently looking for 1-2 motivated and energetic volunteers to join them as Project Assistants this spring/summer.

As part of the Get Rooted! Project Team, volunteer Project Assistants will engage and mobilize like-minded individuals to address the root causes of food insecurity and build fair and sustainable systems.

This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in food security, environmental education, youth engagement, and community development.

Time Commitment: 5 hours/week for 6 months

“Lentil Underground” book launch and cooking demo – Mar 5

Author Liz Carlisle and Dave Oien will be at UBC to tell the remarkable story of an unheralded group of Montana farmers who defied corporate agribusiness by launching a unique sustainable food movement.

Chef Steve Golob of UBC’s Place Vanier will be conducting a cooking demonstration with a the unique heritage grains and pulses from the Montana farmers featured in the book. Bring a bowl and cutlery for samples!

Launch a Career in Canada Event – March 3rd

Launch a Career in Canada is the largest networking event dedicated to supporting international students for career development at UBC.  International students are provided with the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and UBC international alumni, to learn more about the Canadian job market, and gain valuable and practical tips on establishing their careers in Canada.

This event features a keynote presentation, three rounds of interactive roundtable discussion that allows participants to ask questions and interact with professionals from a range of different sectors, followed by a networking session with the industry professionals and international alumni.

PROGRAM

Natural Areas Management Planning is a three-month opportunity to better understand how stakeholders and variables interact with natural areas management planning, gain a fuller sense of the strategies available in species conservation, implement critical thinking, communication, teamwork and leadership skills while gaining experience in creating a land-use management plan.

Environmental Education and Community-based Natural Resource Management is a three-month opportunity to further understand the role that education plays in conservation and community-based natural resource management and to deepen your understanding of the connections between communities, organizations, conservation and natural resource management in addition to understanding why there are species at risk and necessary strategies for their protection. You will work to develop an integrated environmental education program in collaboration with a local school.

FUNDING

International Service Learning Award – The ISL Award for Summer programs valued at $1,500.  All accepted participants will be assessed for eligibility.

Applications are currently being accepting on a rolling basis until March 1, 2015.  Interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

Storm the Wall 2015 – LFS Teams can get sponsored by LFS|US! Deadline Feb 25

Storm the Wall is coming up this March 22th-26th and everyone is encouraged to participate! The first 10 teams comprising mostly LFS students (i.e. at least 3 out of 5 students) will be reimbursed 50% of the registration fee of $45, sponsored by LFS|US. Early bird registration deadline is on Feb 25th.
