Volunteer Facilitators, Tandem UBC Language Exchange – applications due January 14, 2015

The Global Lounge is proudly host to the Tandem Language Exchange at UBC, and Tandem is hiring volunteer facilitators for the Winter 2015 term.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to improve their facilitation skills, intercultural competence and additional languages, as well as become part of a fantastic community at UBC.

The Tandem UBC Language Exchange Program is a free and completely student-run initiative that started off with a very successful pilot project in Spring 2011 by then-graduate student Mary Leighton. Since then, the program has grown and evolved in multiple ways, and this Fall 2014 semester over 860 UBC students, faculty and staff applied to the program.

3M National Student Fellowship – application due January 5, 2015

The 3M National Student Fellowship honours up to ten full-time undergraduate college and undergraduate university students at Canadian institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their lives and at their college or university. These students embrace a vision of quality education that enhances their academic experience and beyond.  Each winner will receive an award of $5,000 to be spent at the winner’s discretion and will also participate in a 3M National Student Fellowship Program retreat. The application process for these awards is extensive and requires that the Vice President, Students review the completed package.  Please submit the package by 4:30 pm, Monday, January 5, 2015 to vpsassist@mail.ubc.ca. Students will hear back from the VP Students office by January 8th. Approved nominations must be submitted by the students to the 3M National Student Fellowship on or before Monday, January 12th 5pm EST.

Dietetics Resume and Cover Letter Workshop – January 8, 2015

Planning to apply to the UBC Dietetics Major for September 2015 entry? Past attendess have found this annual session provided great tips and support for helping to refine cover letters and resumes in preparation for applying the Dietetics Major.  Registration information is below.

UBC Centre for Student Involvement and Careers is pleased to offer a resume and cover letter workshop for all interested Dietetics Major 2015 applicants.

Time: 2:00 pm – 3:20 pm

Location: UBC Vancouver Campus, Civil and Mechanical Engineering Building (CEME), room 1202

Current Dietetics students and Kara Vogt, UBC Dietetics Education Coordinator, will also be in attendance to answer your questions.

We understand that not everyone interested in this session will be able to attend in person due to location or scheduling conflicts. We will therefore be recording the session and posting it, along with any relevant handouts and slides, for access online after the session. APBI 419: Fish Disease offered for 14W Term 2! *Register now!*

It’s back! APBI 419 (Fish Disease) will be offered in Term 2 of the 2014 Winter Session (Jan – Apr 2015).

This course examines fish health and disease from the perspectives of the fish, the pathogen and the environments that they share. Major bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases of cultured fish are explored and the characteristics, epidemiology, prevention, control and management of the causative agents are investigated. While the major diseases covered are particularly important to salmonid culture, the principles and practices are applicable to other species, both warm and coldwater.

Prerequisites: 

Students are required to have taken an animal physiology course (examples: APBI 311, APBI 312, BIOL 361, BIOL 363, BIOL 364, BIOL 454, BIOL 457) and it is recommended that students first take APBI 418 prior to enrolment. Students who wish to enrol in this course but who do not meet the requirements should contact the instructor for permission.

Musical and Artistic Performance: Can we eat fish in the future? Dec, 11

Peter Wall Institute Presents: Can we eat fish in the future? Different tales from the world’s oceans – A musical and artistic performance

UBC’s Laptop Orchestra will present two works involving live instrument, electronic sounds and video projection which present different interpretations of the interplay between nature and humans with respect to oceans, fishing and the earth’s ecosystem.

In addition, researchers will develop scenarios about the future of seafood sustainability and explore the question: Do we have enough seafood to feed the world’s demand in the era of climate change?

“Lives We Live” as part of World AIDS Day, presented by InSA – Dec 1, 2014

The Indigenous Students’ Association (InSA) would like to invite you their event “Lives We Live”.   December 1st is World AIDS Day and the start of Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week (December 1-6th). InSA will be hosting an Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Awareness Day held in Sty-Wet-Tan Hall in the First Nations Longhouse on the UBC campus.  This event will include an information session and a candle light vigil.

1. Information Tables: Organizations such as the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, Red Road HIV/AIDS Network Society, Vancouver Native Health, Northern Task Force, and the Vancouver Infectious Disease Clinic will be present at this event to share information such as Best Practices within BC First Nations’ communities, educate on HIV/AIDS and other blood borne pathogens relevant to those with HIV/AIDS, and bring awareness of the changes that research and their organizations have made on the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS.

2. Candle Light Vigil: To honor those who have gone to be with their ancestors and to honor the commitment of those who have stood beside them in their battle, we will hold a candle light vigil, hear a story from Sandy Lambert (an APHA), and listen to hand-drum songs.

When: Monday December 1st. Information session from 12-4pm. Candle Light Vigil ceremony 5-6pm

On Friday, Nov 28th 2014, Engineers Without Borders Canada is hosting a panel discussion called “The Next Step: Growing Global Citizenship”. This event takes place from 12:00pm-2:00pm, at the Dodson Room – The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre 1961 East Mall Vancouver.
