Mechanical Engineering 2026
General Option

A little bit about me…
Hi everyone, my name is Jung Yi and I am a third-year mechanical engineering student from Regina, Saskatchewan. I moved to Vancouver in September 2021 after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and school was back in person! Going to school in Vancouver has been one of the transformative experiences of my life as I love the outdoors. All year round, you will find me playing ultimate frisbee, dancing, cycling, swimming, running, playing piano, and doing yoga. In the summer, I like to go camping, hiking whereas I like to snowboard in the winter. Thanks to UBC and its plethora of activities offered to students, I have even tried out sports like boxing, Muay Thai, and rock climbing 🙂

I wish I had known before I came…
I wish I had known how to deal with Seasonal Depression Disorder (SAD) when I first moved here. Like a lot of Vancouverites, I was affected by SAD and found it hard to motivate myself to participate in the activities I love. This is why I still do outdoor sports such as ultimate frisbee, cycling, and running because I discovered that the best way to combat the rainy weather was to embrace it.  Don’t forget to take your Vitamin D pills too!

I chose mechanical engineering because…
I enjoyed math, science, and working with my hands. I joined the robotics team in high school and quickly discovered that I enjoyed building things from scratch with machines.

Mechanical engineering at UBC in one word…
Diverse

What I like best about my program…
I like that the program is very broad. When I first entered university, I had no idea what I wanted to get into and the mechanical engineering program helped me build a diverse skillset that could prepare for whatever I later decided I wanted to do in life.

Outside of the classroom, I am involved with…

  • UBC Acapella
  • UBC Dance
  • UBC Intramurals

Favourite moment/memory so far…
I have had a lot of amazing memories (and bad ones lol) and they all have one thing in common, people. My favourite part about going to my extracurricular activities is making and seeing friends. Whether it was winning an ultimate frisbee game, performing for a UBC dance team, or UBC Acapella socials.
