Equinox Summit: Learning 2030
Tomorrow I will take part in the Equinox Summit – learning 2030: http://wgsi.org/equinox-summit/equinox-summit-learning-2030 It will take place on UBC Campus at the Faculty of Education. I am honoured, I was invited to be one of the panelists. In preparation I have read about this initiative and found it interesting. It also resonated with the Next Generation Science Standards widely discussed in the US. It is time to open a similar discussion here, especially considering how educational technologies are affecting our lives and are inevitably affecting our schools and how we learn. Although, I am not exactly sure right now what NEW ideas or outcomes will come out of this Summit, I am interested to find out. I read some of the documents from their web site: http://wgsi.org/equinox-summit/equinox-summit-learning-2030 A lot of things they are mentioning do not look very new to me (which isn’t necessarily bad), but they are certainly timely. The biggest things I found in their communique which were somewhat new were: the focus on giving students more opportunities to be creative with technologies – open the curriculum and assessment of what they have learned and give students opportunities to make mistakes, as if only the right things matter, people will not be creative. I am looking forward to see how these ideas can be implemented in schools and what can we do in teacher education to make this change a reality. I will think more about it and I am interested to participate and to learn. I am glad the Perimeter Institute is sponsoring it and UBC Faculty of Education is participating!
