Philosophy

Now, more and more people are getting a secondary education, however there are less jobs, therefore, there is a need to equip children with the life tools that, with the right implementation, can prepare students for their dynamic futures; “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn” (2014, pg. 58). The BC’s new curriculum home page further adds to this idea and states “British Columbia’s curriculum is being redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering”, which further emphasizes this contemporary and imminent issue (BC’s New Curriculum, 2015).

My philosophy is based around the importance of transference and the use of school as a vehicle to teach valuable life skills. As one goes through school and adulthood, they face many of life’s demanding tasks such as solving complex problems, working with others, contradicting ideas and cultures and situations that test our emotions. My goals and values of a teacher are firmly rooted in developing socially and emotionally competent (SEC) students, preparing them for their dynamic futures (Gergen 2014). I value the importance of physical education, despite its declining precedent in schools, I believe that by creating a learning environment that is supportive, caring, organized and proactive, the valuable learning opportunities are endless; problem solving and making responsible decisions, developing relationship skills that enable them to effectively cooperate, building and maintaining healthy relationships, to become socially aware, to take on new perspectives from which they develop a sense of empathy towards individual differences, to develop a sense of self-awareness of one’s emotions as well as to be able to identify, manage and regulate one’s own behaviors in various situations. In order to accomplish social and emotional competence, it is crucial to create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel welcome to express their authentic selves, to take risks and learn from their mistakes as well as to accept failure rather than fear it.

Empowering the youth of today.
