Week 7

The first week after spring break was an interesting one, and took some energy to refocus myself, as well as the students.

In Spanish we began a new unit on food, continuing our commands unit. I began the first day back with another presentation about myself, just like I did the first day of Practicum. I believe that my students are very interested in real life experiences, especially those involving travelling. I’ve also observed that my students are engaged when I introduce content that is relatable and unique. My presentation consisted of what I did during spring break, where I went and what I ate and from this, I asked my students to explain what they did during their spring break, and I tied in questions that related to the food unit we were about to begin. Specific to my inquiry, this week we started a project where students were to choose an item from a restaurant’s menu that we are going to go to for a field trip in week 10. They were then requried to research the item, explain what is in it, why they choose it and how they might order it at the restaurant. Students were very excited and engaged during this activity, and almost every item on the menu was chosen atleast once. This goes to show that every student’s interests are different, and to fully engage students, we must give them some choice in their learning activities, and try to make them as meaningful and realistic as possible.
