Mental Illness Awareness Week at UBC

As part of our goal & initiative to educate the UBC community & student body on Mental Health & destigmatizing Mental Illness, we are hosting a series of events on four days. Coinciding with National Mental Illness Awareness Week, we’re bringing you these great events:

Monday, October 4: “Jaywalking – Dispelling Myths”

How much do you know about mental health and recovery? This event is a take-off on Jay Leno’s ‘Jaywalking’ where MHAC members will be spreading awareness about mental illness and dispelling myths!

Where: IRC
Time: lunch; 12-1pm

Tuesday, October 5: “Lunch n’ Learn – Interprofessional Collaboration on Working with People Living with Mental Illness”

Watch panel speakers including those from Pharmacy, Family Practice, Psychiatry, Nursing and Occupational Therapy work through a case collaboratively. Learn first-hand how varying health disciplines perceive the same issue and work together. Refreshments provided!

Where: Life Sciences Centre Auditorium 2
Time: 12-12:50pm (doors open at 11:45)

Wednesday, October 6: “Recovery with Mental Illness… hearing voices”

  • Experience auditory hallucinations through a simulation exercise
  • Learn about the Recovery Model
  • Hear stories from healthcare professionals and individuals with mental health issues
  • Participate in an interprofessional discussion on recovery
  • Reception in West Atrium of LSC to follow, with refreshments and draw prizes
  • The event has room for approximately 300 attendees. Due to the healthcare focus of the event, this event is very valuable for students of health care disciplines. At the same time, all students, faculty, staff, community, and patient partners are all welcome to attend.

    Thursday, October 7: “Healthy Minds at UBC: Managing Stress”

    This workshop is designed to help you stay on the right foot by creating wellness balance in your life. With a healthy brain and a balanced lifestyle, you will be more prepared to handle those stressful periods that are inevitable as a busy university student.
