We will never know what is it like to be someone else; the closest we can get is to imagine putting into their shoes and try to guess how they are feeling. It is even harder to understand what is it like to be autistic when you are not on the spectrum, but it is also frustrating for someone who lives with the condition to describe the way he or she sees the world.
Louis Morel overcame this communication barrier by producing a film called ‘The World through Louis’ Eyes’, which focuses on his daily life as someone with Asperger’s Syndrome (a milder form of the autism spectrum disorder characterized by significant difficulties in nonverbal communication and social skills). The combination of the animation with his narration produces an effective visual display of Louis’ view of the world, making it easier to understand what is it like to be him.
Nevertheless, it is important to note that, as he points out, ‘Asperger’s syndrome is a very varied condition and I think what I have is rare among that, so bear in mind not everyone with Asperger’s syndrome will necessarily suffer from things like this.’
