RENT: The Suite Style Musical

Rent is a rock musical based on Giacomo Puccini‘s opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The Suite Style Musical aims to connect students from various disciplines through this collaboration, and at the same time develop an appreciation for music and art.

Auditions for the cast and band will be held on the first week of January, depending on availability.  Anyone interested in being involved (Cast, Band, Crew) should contact John Manson and Ali Lee at suitestyle.musical@gmail.com.   Do check out our Facebook group and Twitter (@ubcss_musical) for updates!

From the Nurse in Rez: Healthy Minds at UBC

Healthy Minds is a new initiative here at UBC that encourages all students to be their healthiest and therefore perform their best at school.  What is a healthy mind?  This initiative states “a healthy mind is one that is primed for learning and success.   A healthy mind can manage stress.  A healthy mind is about balance and knowing who you are and what you believe.  Having a healthy mind will help you to have healthy relationships and get connected to the UBC campus.  A healthy mind is about taking care of your body, knowing your personal limits, and being resilient.  A student with a healthy mind has fun and keeps long-term goals in mind to help stay motivated.” What do you do to have a healthy mind?  Check out the Health Minds blog for lots of great information and ideas.

Following this week we will take a break until the New Year.  We hope you will join us in January-same time, same place!

Advice from a 4th year student

by Sep Rahmani, Gage Residence Advisor

My fellow Gage residents, December is upon us. We all know the holiday festivities are fine and dandy, but the reality is that you look out your window and all of the classic symptoms of exam time are in plain site: it’s 4:30 pm and it is dark, wet, and windy outside and you have only have 1 or 2 weeks to get ready for that one nagging course. Winter Weather … Time to stay indoors – Movie Recommendations

By Molly Lai, Gage Residence Advisor

Winter has finally arrived! The days are cold, rainy and blustery and the weather makes me want to indulge in some of my favorite indoor activities. On the days where you are soaked through within minutes of stepping outside and the wind threatens to lift you off your feet, I do not feel bad about having a lazy day where I curl up on the couch with a bowl of chili and a big wool blanket. Usually I enjoy a good book and a cup of tea but sometimes I want to puzzle. Continue reading
