Call for nominations for two students to serve on a search committee for the next Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic

Dear Students of the Vancouver Campus:

A President’s Advisory Committee for the selection of the next Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic is being formed.

According to University Policy #18, there are two positions for students – one undergraduate, one graduate – to be elected to serve on the Committee.

If you are interested in being nominated, or wish to nominate another student, please contact elections.information@ubc.ca for a nomination form. Please indicate your campus in your email and  whether you are a graduate or an undergraduate student.

All nomination forms are due no later than 4 pm on Thursday, September 19, 2013. If required, voting for candidates will occur in late September.

UBC AMS/GSS Extended Health Coverage

  1. CHANGE OF COVERAGE: Sept. 3 – 24, 2013

    All AMS and GSS members are automatically enrolled in the AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan, including international students and part-time students. Note that incoming exchange students, 3rd/4th year medical students, midwifery students, and students aged 65+ are not automatically enrolled, but may self-enroll during the Change of Coverage Period. Please visit www.ihaveaplan.ca for details or visit the Health and Dental Plan Office located in Room 61 in the Lower Level of the Student Union Building – (Telephone: 1 877 795-4421 or service@studentcare.net).

Students who began their academic year in January and who are also covered by other extended health and dental benefits (not by MSP) may opt out of the Plan. New January students may also opt to enroll their spouse and/or dependents for an additional fee during the Change-of-Coverage Period. 2.     AMS/GSS HEALTH PLAN PREMIUM ASSISTANCE FUND: Deadline by Sept. 24, 2013 at 4PM

Partial or full reimbursement of the Health & Dental Plan fee ($219.31) is available on a need basis from the AMS and GSS through the AMS/GSS Health Plan Premium Assistance Fund. Returning students as well as Students who began their academic year in September and who have not opted out of the AMS/GSS Extended Health & Dental Plan may apply for the bursary. The application form is available at www.gss.ubc.ca/health/.

Reminder: Savage Beast Case Memo – Due 8:00am Monday Sept 16

This is a friendly reminder that your 2nd case memo for the Savage Beast case is due at 8:00am on Monday, Sept 16 via Connect > myIPD > BA 504 (3.0) Integration & Professional Development: Foundation > Integrated Case #2 – Savage Beast Case Memo Dropbox.

A few things to keep in mind when submitting your case memo that would help expedite the grading process:

  • You may make multiple submissions but only your last submission before the deadline will be graded
  • Your case memo and appendix needs to be merged into one single document (only either in Word or PDF)
  • You must provide both your name and student number on your case memo. Please refer to the Case Memo and Citing Instructions on Connect within the Integrated Cases folder. We have had a number of students who did not provide their name on the last case memo

Barb Duzy, one of our instructors from the Business Communications team who facilitated the Writing Feedback Workshop yesterday, would like to share her suggestions for English Language Resources and a writing feedback rubric that will allow you to better understand what we are looking for in professional business writing. Both documents are located on Connect > myIPD > BA 504 (3.0) Integration & Professional Development: Foundation > English Language Resources.

If you are experiencing problems with your submission, please submit your case memo to askmba@sauder.ubc.ca before 8:00am on Monday, Sept 16.

MBA Games – Sign-up – OPEN NOW – Deadline to register is 4:30 pm Sept 20th

The Canadian MBA Games began at Queen’s University in 1988, and has now become a tradition in the Canadian MBA community. Last year the UBC MBA team placed third! – And this year, we know we can do better!

The MBA Games competition provides students an unparalleled opportunity to meet their fellow MBA’s from across Canada, creating a unique platform for companies to interact with students through networking events, academic cases and event sponsorship.

Time Commitment:

MBA Games Team Captains should expect to devote 5-15 hours per week depending on the stage of preparation.  All other participants should also expect to devote 3 hours per week on practicing for the events they are participating in.  In addition, each participant will need to devote an average of 5 hours per week on the video submission and opening ceremony performance.

Financing:

Students who are in good academic standing (70% or above cumulative average and no cases of academic misconduct) are eligible for up to a $400 grant from the Dean’s office.

*Students are expected to pay up front for all competition related expenses and are responsible for paying for food, flights, transportation within the host city, and any other personal expenses.

Students can expect their out of pocket expenses to be roughly around $800, not including the reimbursements noted above.

Please keep in mind that the expense re-imbursement application will be submitted in one lump –sum (for all MBA Games participants) by your MBA Games Representatives directly to the VP Finance, MBA society after the event date.   The VP Finance will then submit the expenses to the MBA & MM Programs office.  It is crucial for you to keep your registration & flight receipt for reimbursement.

Students can expect reimbursement approximately 30 days from the day the expenses are submitted to the MBA & MM Programs office.

More information on the re-imbursement process will be shared as we get closer to the dates of travel.

The MBA Games Representatives will be working with Staff, & Faculty and MBAS Executives on final team selection.  The MBA Games Representative will contact students who are chosen to participate by the second week of October.

From the list of nominees, the class will vote (electronically) to select the top two MBA Games Representatives beginning on Friday, Sept 20th following speeches.  The top two vote getters will be named as MBA Games Team Captains and will be announced by the first week of October.

Period 1 Exam Schedule

The Period 1 exam schedule is now posted on the Sauder website here.  The exam schedule is also posted on your Connect site under:  Home Page >myUBC MBA 2015> myMBA Program> Schedules & Registration> Exam Schedules & Policy > Current Students webpage

Please note, if your module’s final evaluation is not listed please consult with your instructor. Also, the due dates and times for some final evaluations are subject to change depending on the instructor.

As per the Examination Policy:

  • All exams, whether FT or PT, must be sat at the time stated in the exam schedule.
  • Exams may not be re-arranged to accommodate students’ travel plans, irrespective of the reason for travelling.
  • Extensions may only be granted by the MBA & MM Programs Office for medical reasons.
  • Students must notify the MBA & MM Programs Office (askmba@sauder.ubc.ca) prior to the start of the exam if they are too ill to write.  A doctor’s note must be provided prior to the scheduling of a new exam date.

Any student with Examination Hardship defined as THREE or more exams within a 24-hour period should report this to the MBA & MM Programs Office Programs Office (cherry.wang@sauder.ubc.caby no later than Wednesday, September 25, 2013.

Failure to notify the MBA& MM Programs Office of 3 exams within 24 hours by the deadline given may result in students not being able to have an alternate exam sitting.

Resume Blitz Tutorial Sessions

Mary and Rodrigo will be present to field 1-1 and group questions, troubleshoot, and help move your resume forward towards the final resume deadline.
