Trek Calgary – Applications due May 29

Trek Calgary Application Update:  Additional Day added….

Application Deadline: May 29th    Dates: August 25th, 26th & 27th

Trek Calgary is being organized for the end of August this year rather than November. As you know, Calgary (and Edmonton) are growing, vibrant markets and Calgary has a large corporate HQ component. This is an excellent opportunity to:

  • Set-up your own meetings (on days without required programming scheduled and during available time slots during  25th, 26th & 27th)
  • Meet alumni (growing and involved Sauder contingent in Alberta)
  • Meet companies
  • And experience that market

The Trek will include company meetings, an alumni networking event, information about the Calgary market, and time for you to pursue your own meetings with connections you uncover and those we help facilitate.

It is important that we get commitment from students as our ability to secure meetings with companies is predicated on having students committed (and companies typically book the calendars of 2-10 senior people to host Sauder for a Trek visit). Please apply no later than May 29th for Trek Calgary. Ideally, please apply as early as you are able – (internship/summer experience secured and dates figured out).

For your application, please send a cover letter to ian.christie@sauder.ubc.ca covering the following points:

  • Why are you interested in Alberta
  • What kinds of companies are you interested in exploring/meeting
  • What will you do to secure your own connections in advance of Trek to make the most of the trip
  • Your commitment that you will attend if accepted

Please note: If you apply, you are committing to attending.

Negotiating Your Schedule: At the beginning of your summer experience, if you are negotiating with companies, be sure to try and arrange for your internship to complete by August 22 (assuming this allows for the 8 week minimum of FT work). If you have already agreed on dates and they conflict with your interest in attending Trek, you can ask your employer if there is some flexibility.

Expenses: You will be responsible for your own travel and accommodation expenses. A hotel rate will be negotiated. However, you are free to stay where you like, as long as commit to being on time for the itinerary. The BCC will provide you a $300 stipend after the Trek to partially offset your costs.

Looking forward to having you on this worthwhile and fun trip!

4th Year Law Course – Accepting limited number of MBA students for registration Sept – Dec 2014

The Faculty of Law are running a course entitled “Law and the Modern Workplace”, and the instructor feels that it would be a good fit for MBA students. Click to view the LAW 419 002 – Individual Employment Law (Law and the Modern Course Outline. A course schedule and weekly reading assignments will be provided on the first day of class.

The MBA office has reviewed the materials and are happy to count it as 3 credits of outside credits at the senior undergraduate level towards your program degree for those students who are interested in taking it.

Synopsis of the course:

The face of workplace law today has dramatically changed, as a result of the emergence of human rights, privacy and occupational health laws. These laws have opened the doors to employee claims of addictions and/or mental and physical disabilities; employee complaints regarding harassment, discrimination and bullying; and employee complaints regarding privacy violations and unsafe workplaces. With rising health care costs and other pressures on government and society, employers are increasingly required to focus on their employees’ overall wellness. At the same time, technology and social media are blurring the boundaries between work life and private life, with a resulting expectation that the workplace reflect the goals and values of all of its participants.
This course is designed to give students a full appreciation of these various modern day workplace issues; how they arise, their legal and ethical implications for employers and employees, and their broader societal impact.
