Job Search Week & Your Fall Job Search Strategy

While the coaches have been busy meeting and corresponding with you individually, we wanted to provide you with some job search context for the Fall as well as information on upcoming programming to assist with your planning.

Taking Advantage of the Fall

Historically, the students who have been successful generating job outcomes early were very engaged in the fall months. As you approach the end-point of the program, you are at a point when you can now engage in real conversations about real opportunities post-December.

You should be making regular investments in activities like:

  • Upgrade of your brand platform (LinkedIn profile, resume, etc.)
  • Research and targeted exploration of specific companies as well as industry and contact mapping.
  • Quality applications to selected job openings (both on COOL and off)
  • Follow-up on pre-existing leads
  • Weekly investment in working your networks (LinkedIn, other online, offline) to generate new leads, conversations and meetings

Pipeline Management: I want to remind you about the Sales Pipeline tool we provided and workshopped during internship season. Your activities map to a sales funnel and you would do well to apply a system to your efforts.

The idea is that even if you don’t land something before December, you are fully engaged, have planted seeds that might be sprouting, and can be rolling strong into January.

Time in Your Calendar > Job Search Week (Week of Oct. 20th)

In addition to the time available during your regular academic weeks, Job Search Week is in your calendar to fully invest in this process. There is no programming scheduled during job search week. The intent of this week was to provide time for you to make those investments in professional development and networking.

Meeting with your Career Manager: If you have not been able to see Mary/Rodrigo so far since your return, please work on scheduling a meeting as soon as possible to take advantage of this time (please note that they will have very limited availability during Job Search Week given that it coincides with the 1st year IPD week). We want to understand your focus, your mobility to other cities in Canada and internationally, and how we can best support you.

Meet with Ian: I can make myself available for 1-1 appointments should that be of use to you. Best use of time would be around strategy.

Mastermind Workshop: We are working on a potential, alumnus-led workshop. This would be by sign-up for those interested. We will advise, when confirmed.

International Alumni Panel: (Tuesday, Oct. 14th 6pm) This is an event for international students. A panel of MBA alumni will discuss the challenges and opportunities of full-time job search as international students. Invites have already been sent out and a group of alumni are looking forward to meeting you.

Negotiation Mania Day: This is a signature, experiential learning and networking day. Due to the scheduling conflict, we are working on finding a day. We will notify you with news.

Networking Event (Wednesday, Oct. 15th, 5:30-7:30)
We have organized a networking event for your class and the graduating part-time class. We have sent out invites to:

  • Mentors from the various mentoring programs
  • Internship employers
  • Alumni
  • Hiring executives

As of today, more than 50 external guests have responded.

This will be an opportunity to re-connect and meet new people to further your networking and job search / start-up efforts. RSVP on COOL.

Relationship Suggestion: Why don’t you reach out to your mentor(s) and to your internship supervisor and ask them if they plan on attending. This would be a nice touchpoint and reinforce your connections.
RSVP on COOL

COOL Activity: We have noticed very low activity on COOL. Please be logging in regularly to check for company info sessions, events and job postings.

Additional: If a group of you require instruction or coaching around a specific topic or the hunting process, we would be pleased to support that. Please let us know.

We look forward to supporting your success in the coming months and beyond into the New Year.

Capstone Dates: Dec 8-10 2014

NIBC Case Competition

NIBC Team Registration

Registration for the 2015 National Investment Banking Competition is now open!

The National Investment Banking Competition attracts university students from around the world to compete in an investment banking case competition.

The principal focus of the Competition is to provide students with the opportunity to learn and apply practical skills relevant to investment banking. The Competition consists of a Preliminary Round and a Final Round, with cases developed by professionals from top investment banks designed to replicate potential real-world transactions. Participation in NIBC will provide hands-on experience and insight into the daily responsibilities of both junior and senior investment bankers. These responsibilities include analysis of financial data, running scenarios in financial models, evaluating structural alternatives against client parameters, and creating pitch books. Finalists will have the chance to present their advice in a live pitch to a panel of managing directors from leading North American investment banks, while competing for a $15,000 prize pool.

Please refer to our Competition Prospectus and Factsheet for more information, and register at nibc.ca before October 12th, 2014.

CUS National Strategy Consulting Competition

What is NSCC?

The NSCC consists of a Canada-wide three-day competition and one-day conference, sponsored by leading firms such as Deloitte, McKinsey, Bain and BCG, providing exceptional undergraduate and MBA students with a perspective of management and strategy consulting. After a successful inaugural event earlier this year, we are pleased to be back for a second time from November 6-8, 2014 in Vancouver. In addition, all future NSCC events will be held in November to better align with the internship recruitment period.

A breakdown of what to expect for both the competition and the conference is located below:

Competition (3 days) – $40/team preliminary fee

We have redesigned the competition format and aim to provide competitors with a realistic consulting simulation experience — one “live” case spread over a two-day period. There is an opportunity for 12 Undergraduate and 8 MBA teams across Canada to compete for a $1,500 cash prize and first round interviews with Deloitte’s Consulting practice. Additional interviews may be offered to winning teams based on performance.

– Thursday afternoon/evening: Arrive at Hyatt Regency hotel and kick off NSCC with the Welcome Dinner

– Friday: Transportation to UBC Sauder School of Business and work on case from 9am-5pm

– Friday evening: Exclusive networking event with local and national consulting firms

– Saturday morning-afternoon: Work on case until 2pm; first round of judging

– Saturday evening: Finalists announced; Wine & Cheese reception; Gala Dinner with final presentations; Winners announced

NSCC – Case Simulation Information & Rules 2014

NSCC Factsheet 2014

Although the application period has already begun, students still have time to form a team and submit the preliminary case by our deadline, 11:59pm PST on October 1, 2014. For more information regarding our event and to register a team, please visit our website at www.thenscc.com. The preliminary fee is $40/team and a second installation of $180 or $250 (2 or 3 night stay at the hotel) will be due if the team is chosen to advance.

Conference (1 day)

We have tailored our conference to best suit the experience level of each delegate, either Novice or Experienced. The workshops will address key areas that interest the student based on his or her chosen stream. Our workshops, speaker sessions and Wine & Cheese networking reception will provide 150 of Canada’s brightest business students with the opportunity to gain a well-rounded understanding of the industry, including: what consulting is, the skills required to succeed and what to expect at a client engagement.

Not only will the NSCC provide an invaluable opportunity for top students to demonstrate their analytical and pitching skills on a national stage, delegates will also gain quality networking exposure to an array of like-minded students and highly-regarded consulting professionals.

I have included a brief fact sheet of both events for you to read and distribute. The competition information & rules package is also included in the attachments for your convenience. Would you be willing to reach out to your students via email on our behalf?

Case Competition Invite: November 13-14 at Baylor University in Texas

Collusion, whistleblowing, and conflicts of interest are all possible themes for this year’s MBA Case Competition in Ethical Leadership. Last year the case focused on insider trading at Goldman Sachs. This competition is hosted by the Hankamer School of Business, and provides an opportunity for MBA students to put their case presentation skills to the test against peers from reputable American b-schools.

If you are interested in representing Sauder at this competition, read on:

There have been a number of recent cases in the news where inappropriate private behavior has had an impact on business: http://goo.gl/5MbqZ3 ; http://goo.gl/AX8r8l .

To demonstrate your understanding of the issues at play and your ability to address those issues, write a short summary (one page MAX; bullet points encouraged) of the recommendations you would provide to the board of directors of a tech firm that is concerned about the private behaviour of its CEO. This CEO has a reputation of being controversial and sometimes inappropriate, and the Board wants to protect the firm from the risks this presents.

All students interested in this opportunity must complete the above assignment and email it to cde@alumni.ubc.ca by 8:00pm on Tuesday September 30th. The team will be selected by October 2nd.  Questions can also be directed to cde@alumni.ubc.ca.
