Screening of Story of India: A documentary by Micheal Woods (BBC)
Friday, March 14th , 2014
2:00 pm-3:30 pm
Boardroom #231, C.K. Choi Building, 1855 West Mall

India’s history is a ten thousand year epic but for over two millennia, India has been at the center of world history. It has seen successive invasions from Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan to Tamburlaine and the British, all of whom left their mark but all of whom succumbed, in the end, to India herself. For all that time India has been famous for its spiritual traditions; it gave birth to two world religions, one of which-Buddhism-had a profound impact on all of East Asia, China, Japan and Korea, and in modern times has found root even in the US and Europe. The subcontinent is home to one of the world’s greatest-and least understood-artistic traditions and to an extraordinary spectrum of music, dance and literature. India was also, and still is, a great center for technology and science, inventing-for example-the decimal system with zero, which is the basis of all modern science, mathematics and economics. India gave birth to some of the most remarkable characters in world history, including the Buddha, the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, and the Moghul emperor Akbar the Great, not to mention the likes of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi.

Global Immersion and the Rewrite the Rules Campaign

At the February 1 Global Immersion Experience training Murali spoke to how he hoped the class would engage with the Rewrite The Rules Campaign.  The following week, the Marketing and Communications team held an information session that provided more context. If you weren’t able to attend (or even if you did and need a reminder) please review the info below and keep this top of mind when in Denmark, China or India!

___

In order to take your experience further, as well as support our marketing pieces that promote the UBC MBA and your GIE …Apply the Rewrite the Rules / Fresh Perspectives lens to your Global Immersion Experience and engage in real-time.

As you travel about your city and meet with businesses, work with people and generally travel about, think about the key campaign themes and how you can tell your experience through them: #innovation #creativity #leadership. Consider, how is Global Immersion changing your outlook on or understanding of these important aspects of business?

  • capture quotes, images, video; talk to people, look around  – immerse yourself and reflect and share
  • Take photos or video (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all will do, just be sure to use the hashtags!)
    • how do locals view each of these concepts within a business environment?
    • what does each them look like in Copenhagen? Bangalore? Shanghai?
    • what are you or others around you doing that’s creative, innovative, or expressing leadership quality?
    • how is what you’re experiencing changing your perspective on business given any one of these themes, or the #rewritetherules attitude in general?

Use #GIE2014 and #rewritetherules and and let us know which city you’re in and what theme you’re exploring with the post – tweet to @UBCSauderSchool  or post to your MBA Facebook group.  Marketing and Communications  will be watching the feeds to aggregate the best into a roundup to be presented at the March Wrap Up and via a campaign story to be profiled on site.

If you’ll be tweeting, please email Kristina Baric (kristina.baric@sauder.ubc.ca) with your @handle so we can keep track of you that way as well.

Each of the staff leads will have “business cards” that you will be able to take with you to give to people you meet, use as a talking point.  We can’t wait to see your interpretation and understanding of rewriting the rules!

Global Immersion Teams 2014

We are excited to announce the complete team lists for the three remaining locations.  To come to the newly assigned teams, we deleted Nairobi from the rankings you provided earlier and maintained the commitment to have participants assigned to their first or second choices, while respecting the new capacity constraints that we negotiated with the partner schools. Any additional spots were assigned via a lottery drawn by one of your class ombudsmen.

An example of the re-ranking would be:

  1. Shanghai
    2. Nairobi
  2. Bangalore
  3. Copenhagen

Please wait to hear from our office with regards to next steps before making any travel arrangements.

We look forward to meeting in our new and more robust teams on October 26th!
