Internship/Entrepreneurial Projects: Important Reminders

A few reminders as we all get back into the routine of either internship search, or paperwork required for those of you who have secured offers or plan on entrepreneurial projects.

Scheduling Interviews:  For many this is a time of year for interviewing and we just wanted to remind you to try and schedule interviews around your class schedule. We respect sometimes it is difficult, but do your best not to ask professors for time off. Often employers can be flexible when you let them know you have a class in the same window.

Accepting Offers:  For some of you, there may be two offers pending and we want to remind you about the importance of understanding that if you accept a verbal offer, you are no longer in the running for future opportunities. We are happy to help you navigate the acceptance of an internship, and help with communication around leaving a door open with an employer for permanent opportunities when you are placed for the summer. (Please communicate with us when you have tough questions to consider).

Paperwork Reminder: For all of you seeking or have secured an internship or entrepreneurial project, there is mandatory paper work required. All students must be assigned to faculty and faculty must be aware of your intentions and we manage that piece, given it’s for credit. If you are not sure what to do first, check in with your career coach or Carly Boettcher to find out what needs to be signed off. All the paperwork is found on Connect -> MyMBA Career– under the tab labelled “Summer Experience”.

Summer Work Visa (International Students):  Finally, many of you need a visa, or co-op work permit to work in the summer and we manage that as well. Once you have your Co-op permit and SIN Card information, please communicate with Carly Boettcher so she knows you are accounted for.

Interview Request Etiquette

Hello FT MBA Class of 2015,

It is that time of year when MBA internship postings start lighting up under your “Jobs” tab on COOL.  You start applying to roles and sure enough you receive an email “Interview Request” for a particular employer from the BCC….

Since there are quite a few job postings facilitated via the BCC it definitely makes it easier for me to determine final interview schedules when I receive a response from short-listed candidates within a 24 hour period.

Email in the past has seemed to work wonders, as students are most likely checking their emails throughout the day.  Going forward I will call you just once after 24 hours to ensure you have received my interview request email and confirm your acceptance if I have not heard from you.

Just a heads up that some postings have VERY quick turnarounds in regards to interview requests, so it is greatly appreciated in advance if you respond to my email request (marked “High Importance” of course).

I do wish you all the very best in securing some great summer internships, and don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions/concerns going forward during our busy internship season in the months ahead…

Kind regards,

Carly Boettcher, Graduate Careers Assistant

Leaders Event: Company Names

As a change of normal process, we have decided to release the company names of individuals who have RSPV’d for the event tonight.

  • Please note: There is always a certain no-show rate among guests, so don’t count 100% on there being someone there from a specific company
  • Guests are a combination of current and prospective employment partners, alumni and mentors as well as some staff and faculty.
  • Guests RSVP for different reasons – some representing their company on the hunt for talent, some mostly to hear the speaker, or because they are a mentor or alumnus, or to network. So please act accordingly. Do not be aggressive in looking for internships. That should not be the target outcome of the event. You are there to be exposed to leaders and companies and extend your network.

Instructions for Leaders Reception

For those of you who have RSVP’d for Thursday’s Leaders Reception,

Logistics:

  • Arrive at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia between 5:00 (no earlier) and 5:20. No later.
  • This is a business formal event. Professional attire including an appropriate suit and a tie for the gentlemen.
  • Wear your name tags. Bring your business cards, if you have them.

What to Expect:

  • There are over 100 business people who have RSVPd, from CEOs to VP, Directors and Senior Managers. There are many Sauder alumni on the list.
  • Cocktail reception & networking from 5:30 (some guests arrive earlier) -6:30
  • Speeches from 6:30-7:05
  • Networking from 7:05-7:30

Best Practices:

  • Guests attend this event for a variety of reasons. It is an opportunity for you to practice your networking skills, meet successful, interesting people, and perhaps expand your network.
  • No one should be asking for internships. Introduce yourself. Ask about their company, or their job. Tell them about you and what you want to do. Talk about relevant current events, or industry trends. Tell them about global immersion.
  • Circulate.
  • If you have had a good conversation, you can ask for permission to follow-up. Use your best judgement.
  • We know this is out of the comfort zone for many of you. Our team will do our best to make introductions. Dive in. Be your best professional self.

This is a showcase event for the school, for the class and for you individually. Looking forward to it!
