Subject: Best Practices Using LinkedIn

As we approach this new unit with a main focus on LinkedIn, I would like to share my findings regarding some of the best practices for utilizing LinkedIn as a professional networking site.

  1. Complete profile
  2. Professional headshot
  3. Welcoming summary section
  4. Show work experience
  5. Show achievements
  6. Update LinkedIn status frequently
  7. Respond to messages regularly
  8. Give recommendations/endorsements
  9. Make connections
  10. Post professional content only

LinkedIn is essentially a digital copy of your resume, where your contact details and experiences are displayed. With that being said, it is important that you have a complete profile with a professional headshot, a detailed history of your work experiences and achievements, as well as a warm and welcoming summary section.

Aside from the initial set up of your LinkedIn profile, it is equally important that you maintain your profile up to date. Any job changes or new achievements should be updated promptly.

In order to effectively use LinkedIn as a professional networking tool, active interaction is key. This may include sending and responding to messages regularly as well as giving recommendations and endorsements to those you know.  A useful function on LinkedIn under the tab labelled “My Network” also allows you to make connections online.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing your LinkedIn profiles soon.
