UBC Bus Loop by Naomi / CC BY-SA 2.0

Did you know that if you regularly commute to UBC by carpooling, biking, transit or walking, the Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program will pay for 90% of your cab fare (pre-tip) if an emergency arises?

How does it work?

  • Use a taxi to travel as your emergency requires
  • Request a taxi receipt that indicates the fare paid, not including the tip
  • Submit the original receipt along with an application form to the ERH program

The program is available to all UBC faculty, staff and students at the UBC Main Campus, South Campus, Robson Square and Hospital sites.

In order to be eligible you must:

  • Use a non-single occupancy vehicle (SOV) commute mode to travel to UBC at least 3 times per week
  • You must have used the non-SOV mode to travel on the day you request an ERH
  • The trip is between a University site and the location of the emergency, a resident, hospital or to get to the location of a parked vehicle
  • The program can be used a maximum of 4 times per year

What qualifies as an emergency?

  • Personal illness
  • Illness of child or dependent
  • Family emergency

The following do not qualify:

  • You worked overtime
  • You missed your carpool or the last bus
  • Your class is cancelled
  • You need to travel from work to a scheduled appointment
  • You need to pick up your car from the auto repair shop
