Waitlist registration is now open for the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) August 19, 25, 26 2018.  The ISW is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence.  It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.  Join the thousands of students who have taken this workshop. The ISW is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation. In addition, graduate students in STEM departments are eligible to become CIRTL associates upon completion of the workshop.    

IMPORTANT: The workshop runs from 8:15am-5:00pm. Please note you must attend all three days for the complete duration of the workshop, i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop.  Please find attached the policy for registering in an ISW.

The UBC Senate has approved updated policies and procedures relating to supervisory committees and University examiners to reflect the enhanced relationship between UBCV and UBCO faculty:  

Graduate supervision:

·        Members in good standing of the College of Graduate Studies from the UBC Okanagan campus may now co-supervise UBC-Vancouver master’s and doctoral students and/or serve on master’s and doctoral student supervisory committees without requiring approval from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.  Approval for UBC-Okanagan faculty in these roles is the responsibility of the graduate program concerned.  Note that sole supervision of UBC-Vancouver master’s and doctoral students by UBC-Okanagan faculty does require the approval of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, upon the recommendation of the graduate program concerned.  UBC-O faculty are not members of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

 University Examiners for final doctoral oral exams:

·        Members in good standing of the College of Graduate Studies from the UBC Okanagan campus who hold an appointment as a full, associate, or emeritus professor and who are formally affiliated with a graduate program there that offers the doctoral degree are now eligible to serve as University Examiners for final oral examinations for UBC-Vancouver doctoral students.  Note that quorum requires that University Examiners be physically present in the examination room, and that G+PS does not cover the travel expenses of University Examiners.

FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership 

We are excited to offer FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership for the 2018/19 academic year. Please find a description attached and feel free to email any questions to ocean.leaders@ubc.ca 

Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership helps students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to translate research into policy and management innovations. Students are mentored on a variety of professional development skills by faculty in UBC’s Ocean Leaders program and off-campus collaborators.  

Class exercises include scenario planning, science communication and knowledge translation, collective leadership, and strategies for working with stakeholders including governments, NGOs and the broader community 

As part of the course, students work in interdisciplinary groups on local marine and coastal challenges with community partners. Recent projects included: 

·         Making False Creek swimmable

·         UBC plastic use and its ocean impacts

·         Managing shoreline waste

 Wednesdays 2–4 pm

Terms 1 and 2 

Meets eight times a semester
