Girls’ Coding Workshop at John Oliver

We’re looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers to help us introduce girls in grades 6 to 9 to coding! In this six-week program, students will learn to write Python code to draw things using turtles and make simple games, as well as program Micro:bits. This term, we’re also piloting an advanced curriculum for returning students, which focuses on algorithm design, data visualization, and using Python libraries.

When: Tuesdays 3:30-5:45 PM from mid-April to late May

6 weeks total, exact dates TBD

Where: John Oliver, 530 East 41st Ave (41st & Fraser)

Volunteer requirements:
-Knowledge of Python (you don’t need to be an expert, since we’re starting at a very basic level)

-Awesome teaching and communication skills, commitment to communicating your passion for coding to the next generation

-Be able to attend all 6 workshops, plus a few planning meetings before the first session and in between as needed. If you need to miss a session or two that’s not a complete dealbreaker; we will try to work with you on this!

-Pass a criminal record check (we will cover the cost of this)

If you’re interested, please email claire.bomkamp@gmail.com by March 22nd with the following information:
-Your name

-Year & program at UBC

-Brief description of what you use code for in your own studies, research, and/or what you plan to do in the future. We are interested in having a group of volunteers with a variety of specialties (game developers, bioinformaticians, etc.) so that we can better communicate the wide range of what code is used for in the real world.

-Previous teaching/volunteer experience that you feel is relevant.

-Any questions you might have!
