Graduate Student Statutory Holiday Pay

Earlier in the year the GSS was made aware of an issue that a number of non-unionized part time graduate student employees of UBC were not being paid statutory holiday pay according to the BC employment act. This affected students with multiple appointments and was due to an administrative oversight with the hours from the roles not being aggregated.

We took this up with UBC HR and the ombudsperson. As a result of our efforts UBC have circulated a memo to all departments outlining the correct procedures and hopefully resolving the issue.

GSS President Nicolas Romauldi says:

“We hope this solves the problem permanently, but we ask graduate students to please tell us if this issue re-appears so we can communicate with UBC HR immediately. We will maintain our position that a robust solution at a systemic level is necessary.

For any student who thinks they may have been affected by this issue, we encourage you to verify your pay stubs and bring the issue to your respective payroll if there are inconsistencies. Of course. if you are having problems getting a satisfactory resolution you are more than welcome to contact us.”
