Assisting new international TA/RAs with obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

We wanted to highlight our SIN Clinic starting August 27 – International Advising Office in collaboration with Service Canada are offering exclusive on-campus appointments for new UBC students to obtain their SIN.

Does your TA position begin soon or do you want to work in Canada? Before you can start working you need to get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) from Service Canada. You will also need to provide your SIN to UBC for tax purposes.

Service Canada will come to the UBC Life Building to issue SINs exclusively for UBC students starting August 27. This saves you a one hour commute to the nearest Service Canada office.

UBC Affiliated Fellowships

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) competition. Students who submit an NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR doctoral award application are eligible for open Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. To be considered for criteria-based affiliated fellowship(s), students should submit this checklist to their graduate program.

Those applying only for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered.

Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D)

Applicants applying through UBC will either be:

• currently registered in, or are on an approved leave of absence from, a degree program at UBC
• not currently registered in but was registered at any other time during the year of application in a degree program at UBC

Application will continue to be submitted via each of the agency platforms. The application portals are now open and applicants may begin preparing their applications.

CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements – Fall 2019 Competition

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.

Applicant eligibility: Open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS.

Please note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this award.

Award value: Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months

Applicant deadline: 4:00pm on Friday, 17 September 2019

Sustainability Work Learn Opportunities

UBC Sustainability Work Learn positions are now open for the Fall 2019 term. Positions are available to current undergraduate and graduate students. The work terms are Sept 1, 2019 – April 30, 2020 and 10 hrs/week unless otherwise noted.

Tech Entrepreneurship (APSC541/BAEN506) has been running for over 25 years and has facilitated many entrepreneurial ventures and realized numerous successful breakout companies such as DWave, Zymeworks, and Recon Instruments – just to name a few.   This course pairs graduate business and APSC/STEM students to provide an experience-based introduction into the lean start-up process. It is a real-life simulation of the process that founders go through when starting a high-tech company. Students will be faced with the key issues involved in evaluating market opportunities, building a prototype, designing profitable business models, producing a solid business plan, raising capital, addressing legal considerations and developing a winning team. Students will gain the skills and tools to creatively commercialize high-tech research into profitable businesses. Teams will be expected to develop credible pitches that will be made to industry professionals.  Some of these student companies go on to participate in e@UBC, the Hatch and Creative Destruction Lab

There is still room for more APSC students to participate in this dynamic course.  The next two deadline for applications are as follows:

• September 24th
• November 8th – based on availability.

The core of the course runs on Wednesday evenings from January to April; and there are 3 critical and mandatory preliminary classes that take place in November dedicated to team formation (November 13, 20 and 27 – 6pm).  The course is taught by a team of business and STEM/APSC instructors for a well-rounded business and technical perspective.

The course has an application process for admission as it is very competitive, with deadlines and rolling admission in early August, September and November.
