Graduate Research Foundations: Skills for Respectful Research (Graduate student workshop series)

This workshop series has been created by five graduate students to address a current training gap. The Graduate Skills Foundations Workshop series seeks to build the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to do respectful research. Respectful research is grounded in the principles of reciprocity, action, and anti-oppression. It involves questioning our own position within systems we operate in and identifying our sources of power. It is finding the confidence and skills to use this power to make real change in our research and workplaces. It means addressing. Doing respectful research requires bravery. Building from our shared experience of being in graduate school (never an easy position), we ask you to bravely step forward and attending one or more workshops to learn (and unlearn) how to be a more respectful researcher.

Some of the learning (and unlearning) will be uncomfortable as we gain awareness of our own privileges and, maybe even, previous missteps. This unsettling complexity will be supported and challenged with care, accountability and compassion acknowledging that we are all in a process. Google PhD Fellowship

The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding PhD graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science and related research areas. The fellowship provides full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment for two years, with possible extension for a third year. Recipients are also matched with a Google Research Mentor.

The application deadline for this opportunity is November 6, 2019 at 4:00 pm PST.  Note: Applicants apply directly to Graduate Awards; graduate programs do not submit nominations.

This year, the Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program is teaming up with the Graduate Student Society (GSS) and the Public Scholars Initiative (PSI) to celebrate dynamic graduate students who engage in public scholarship, solutions-oriented research, and/or knowledge translation.

In this one-of-a-kind conference, we aim to disrupt scholarship inaction by showcasing Scholarship in Action.

In an effort to increase the accessibility and applicability student work across disciplines, we are elevating creative presentation formats.

The iGSN serves as a platform to connect grad students from across various disciplines. We organize academic as well as social events to promote interdisciplinary mingling. We also provide travel awards to well-deserving candidates who choose to apply. The waitlist for the Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) for November 24, 30 & December 7, 2019 opens on October 7, 2019.

The ISW is a three-day, fully participatory, and peer-based professional development workshop for graduate students that is beneficial to both new and experienced instructors. The ISW is an internationally recognized program and participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a certificate of completion and a transcript notation. Participants will have the opportunity to teach three mini-lessons to a group of students, receive critical feedback on their teaching, provide feedback to their peers, and reflect on their teaching practices. IMPORTANT: The workshop runs from 8:15am-5:00pm. Please note you must attend all three days for the complete duration of the workshop, i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop.

To create an equitable registration process all graduate students who register for an ISW will first be enrolled on a waitlist, from which participants are randomly selected.
