The conference features a keynote address and oral and poster presentations from graduate students in 8 different LFS programs: Applied Animal Biology, Food Science, Human Nutrition, Integrated Studies in Land and Food Systems, Master of Food Science, Master of Food and Resource Economics, Plant Science, and Soil Science!

Registration is 15 dollars and includes complete access to the conference plus breakfast, lunch, and access to the awards reception.

Reminder: 3rd annual UBC PAW Animal Welfare Conference!

The UBC Pre-Vet and Animal Welfare (PAW) club is happy to present its 3rd annual UBC PAW Animal Welfare Conference! This year’s conference has a focus on “Wildlife Management and Conservation”, with five renowned speakers joining to share their expertise. The 2019 UBC PAW Animal Welfare Conference looks to shed more light on human-wildlife interactions and how an individual may personally impact wildlife welfare in their day-to-day life.

This year’s conference will be held at the Graduate Student Society Loft in the AMS Nest (RM 4202) on March 8th from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Our speakers include professors from the University of British Columbia and University of Calgary, as well has animal health care professionals from the Vancouver Aquarium, and a representative from the BC SPCA. Each speaker has had experience working with wildlife and are longtime advocates for wildlife welfare.

IRES Vancouver Summer Program Instructor

Position Title: Vancouver Summer Program Instructor

Duration: June – August, 2019 (the teaching period will be from July 13th – August 13th, but this includes course preparation time as well as grading and student evaluations after the program)

Role and Responsibilities:

The UBC Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) is seeking an instructor to teach courses for the UBC IRES’s Vancouver Summer Program. The VSP is a one month condensed summer program offered to international undergraduate students to come and experience life and classes at UBC. Instructors will be responsible for course preparation (some materials will be provided), four weeks of teaching (July 13th – August 13th, 2019, 39 contact hours), marking, and some social activities during that period. Each package has two courses taught for 3 hours per day (with some days off over the weeks due to student social events). The successful candidate will work closely with another lead instructor to provide a cohesive package to the students. Our emphasis is on active learning teaching methods where students are inspired to explore the subject matter through field trips, labs, discussions, and in‐class activities, and as such there is some flexibility in the course design and progression.

In particular, we are looking for an individual who will be able to teach the following course: 

Energy for Sustainable Development

Climate change is only one of many challenges we face, and large-scale innovation in energy systems will be needed to meet multiple objectives including reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Technological and business innovations have begun to transform the global energy system. From the development of renewables such as solar and wind, deployment of complex networked technologies (such as electric vehicles), or the diffusion of novel ‘mundane’ technologies (such as improved cook stoves in the developing world), technological innovation holds the key to our energy future. This course will examine what is driving these innovations, how their promise might be reached and their benefits be maximized, and what social and policy efforts are needed to sustain them. This course will include field trips and presentations by industry guest speakers, as well as speakers from non-governmental organizations and the public sector.

 

Qualifications:

 Master’s degree in a related field (PhD is preferred)

 Expertise in the subject matter of the course

 Previous teaching experience

 Previous experience working with international students

 Ability to work individually and/or in teams

 Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

 Excellent organizational skills

 Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities

 Excellent interpersonal skills

 Ability to plan and execute course curriculum

The Weston Brain Institute Funding

The Weston Brain Institute has up to $10m in funding available through the 2019 programs that are currently accepting applications. A full list of programs can be found here.  In particular, please note that the deadline of the Rapid Response and Transformational Research Canada 2019 Parkinson’s & Related Diseases program has been extended. The LOI deadline is now May 15, 2019.

Several exciting changes have been made to these programs, including increasing the Rapid Response budget to $300,000 and allowing more kinds of interventions such as cognitive therapy. More information is on the website.

Centre for Student Involvement and Careers

Graduate Student Career Activation Project

The CSIC wants to know how graduate students can activate their careers, and we have funds available to help you try stuff out. Dream big, or dive deep: whether it’s the cost of printing business cards to support your networking, enhancing your French language skills to prepare for a career in the federal government, or paying membership fees to join a professional association, submit a proposal for a career development experience that you believe will get you one step closer to your goals. Each student may apply for funding of any amount up to $1000.

Once you’ve activated, we’ll work with you to develop an appropriate artefact (video interview, blog, etc.) so that your experience can be shared with other UBC graduate students and the university community.
