CIHR Info Sessions for Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral CIHR applicants

CIHR will be offering a series of 1 hour MS Teams live events to trainees* and institution staff regarding award programs that are offered. They will do an overview about relevant policies, tips for applicants, guidelines on how to submit an application and other relevant information.

*Trainees in CIHR terminology are Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral applicants.  For more information, see CIHR Health Research Training Award Programs.

No registration is required.  The event details are below:

English sessions:

Competition Announcement: Tri-Agency CGS (CGSD) / Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral Competitions

Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D)

Applicants applying through UBC will either be:

  • currently registered in, or are on an approved leave of absence from, a degree program at UBC
  • not currently registered in but was registered at any other time during the year of application (2021) in a degree program at UBC

If a student is not sure where to submit their application, they can consult the CGSD chart “Where should I submit my application?

Applications will be submitted via each of the agency platforms.
The application portals are now open and applicants may begin preparing their applications.

UBC Affiliated Fellowships – Doctoral competition

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) competition. Students who submit an NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR doctoral award application are eligible for “unrestricted” Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. To be considered for “criteria-based” affiliated fellowship(s), students must submit this checklist to their graduate program by the application deadline.

Those applying only for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered for the Affiliated.

CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements – Fall 2021 Competition

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.

Applicant eligibility: Open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. Please note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this award.

Award value: Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months

Applicant deadline: 4:00 pm PDT on Friday, 10 September 2021 (applicants apply directly to G+PS)

Friendly reminder to students who are hoping to complete their program by August 31st and graduate in November 2021

Last day for G+PS approval of final master’s theses and doctoral dissertations for August 31 end date Friday, 27 August 2021 Last day for final master’s theses and doctoral dissertations to be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies for August 31 program end date. Must be approved and accepted (not just submitted) by 4:00 pm. Students are expected to submit 3-5 days before this approval deadline in order to have time for corrections.
Last day for students to complete all program requirements for August 31 end date Friday, 27 August 2021 Last day for students to complete all program requirements (including major papers) for non-thesis master’s degrees for August 31 program end date. Students who meet this deadline will not be assessed tuition and student fees for 2021 Winter Session Term 1.
Last Day for Acceptance of Final, Approved Doctoral Dissertation (August 31, 2021 Program End Date) Friday, 27 August 2021 Last of four deadlines for program completion by August 31, 2021.
Last day for application for November graduation Friday, 10 September 2021 Last day for applications for Congregation to be submitted to Enrolment Services by all graduate students expecting to graduate in November 2021. Application is made through the Student Service Centre.
