Le Dr Benoît Lamarche est professeur titulaire à l’École de nutrition de l’Université Laval et directeur scientifique du Centre de recherche sur la nutrition, la santé et la société (NUTRISS), financé par le FRQS. Il a publié plus de 425 articles évalués par des pairs sur des questions physiologiques, cliniques, épidémiologiques et de santé publique liées à l’alimentation et à la santé. Dans cet épisode, Dr Lamarche présentera de nouvelles perspectives sur le rôle de l’intelligence artificielle dans la recherche en nutrition.

Artificial Intelligence in Nutrition Research? Between Promises and Reality with Dr. Benoît Lamarche

CNS is pleased to announce the release of Episode 7 of the Nutrition Conversations Podcast featuring guest speaker Dr. Benoît Lamarche and moderator, Dr. Shirin Panahi!

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field that offers unparalleled opportunities for progress and applications in many areas of health, including nutrition. Dr. Benoît Lamarche is a Professor at the School of Nutrition at Université Laval and Scientific Director of the FRQS-funded Centre de recherche sur la nutrition, la santé et la société (NUTRISS). He has published over 425 peer-reviewed articles on physiological, clinical, epidemiological and public health issues related to diet and health. In this episode, Dr. Lamarche will provide some new perspectives on the role of artificial intelligence in nutrition research.

Good afternoon:

Since 2015, the LFS Graduate Student Travel Award has provided over $300,000 in funding to LFS students to attend and present a research paper or poster describing their thesis research at a scientific meeting/conference, held by a professional society, outside the Lower Mainland.  100% of this funding comes from a generous $1.4 million endowment from the estate of Ursula Knight Abbott.  In 2022-2023, 51 LFS GSTAs were awarded totalling over $77,000.

A number of changes have been made to the LFS Graduate Student Travel Award for 2023-2024.  The new application will be in effect between September 1, 2023 and August 31, 2024.

Here’s a summary of the changes –

• The application is now a Qualtrics survey.
• An expense summary and/or receipts are no longer needed.  Proof of presentation is still required.
• Supervisor’s signature is no longer required (both the student and supervisor will be informed via email once an award nomination has been sent to G&PS for processing).
• The award value has been changed from up to $1500 to a lump award offer of $1750.

MSc students may claim up to one award per degree program.

PhD students may claim up to two awards per degree program;  PhD students can only claim one award per funding period September 1 to August 31.

• Students who have already claimed their maximum number of LFS GSTAs may email the Manager, Graduate Programs – LFS to request consideration for additional awards.  These will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional information will be posted on the LFS website on Friday (Sept 1).

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will be offering a Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) on October 14, 21 & 22, 2023.

The Grad ISW is a 24-hour, fully participatory, and peer-based professional development workshop for graduate students that is beneficial to both new and experienced instructors.

Please note: You must attend all face-to-face sessions and complete all independent work for the complete duration of the workshop, (i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop).

Application opens on September 1 at 9 am and closes on October 11, 2023 at 4:30 pm. By clicking this link, you are applying for the WAITLIST only and this DOES NOT register you for the workshop. Graduate ISWs at UBC are in high demand. To create an equitable registration process all graduate students who apply for an ISW will first be enrolled on a waitlist, from which participants are randomly selected. If a participant has applied for more than one ISW waitlist, their name will appear more frequently when generating the participant list, giving them a higher chance of being selected for an ISW. If you are accepted into the workshop, you will be contacted by our office to confirm your registration. Workshop Eligibility:

 

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is eligible if they are:

• a full-time or part-time registered graduate student at UBC during the academic term when the ISW is offered
• a graduate student at UBC who has completed degree requirements but has not yet convocated
• a joint degree graduate student who is enrolled at UBC and another institution
• a graduate student at UBC pursuing non-degree studies
• a visiting graduate student that is eligible to take courses

 

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is not eligible if they are:

• not a graduate student at UBC
• a graduate student at UBC who has on-leave status
• a visiting graduate student that is not eligible to take courses

I’m wondering if you’re able to share some information with LFS grad students about the upcoming LFS TA Orientation happening on Sept 6th. I have attached the poster with a QR code for students who would like to attend to RSVP.

The orientation is geared towards current TAs but any who has TAed or is planning on TAing in LFS is also welcome to attend to learn about the program, it’s resources and participate I some teaching-related training.

This is the last week of the current funding period for the 2022-2023 LFS Graduate Student Travel Award.  Please make sure you submit your travel award application by Wednesday, August 30^th to ensure it will be processed under this current funding period.

There will be changes to the 2023-2024 LFS Graduate Student Travel Award.  I’m hoping to finalize a new application by Friday, September 1, 2023.  Details will be posted online and distributed via the gradstud listserve.
