CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (MSFSS) – 3rd intake for 2022-2023

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.

This program is available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS. Note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this competition.

CIHR has launched a third intake (‘3rd call’) for the 2022-2023 MSFSS competition with the intention of awarding the remaining supplements from the two previous intakes. CIHR has sufficient funds for approximately 12 awards (nationally). Eligible applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Complete and eligible applications will be forwarded to CIHR as they are received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Note that NSERC and SSHRC are not participating in this special ‘3rd call’ MSFSS competition this year (only CIHR is participating), so NSERC and SSHRC award holders are not eligible to apply for this competition.

Value: Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months

Applicant deadline: 4:00 pm PT on 20 January 2023.  Note that that this competition is “first come, first served” – applicants are encouraged to submit their applications in advance of the application deadline, if possible, as CIHR is accepting applications on a “first come, first served” basis.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – UBC SUSTAINABILITY SCHOLARS (PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS) 

The UBC Sustainability Hub is pleased to offer UBC graduate students the opportunity to work on funded sustainability internship projects.

We are currently accepting applications for over 64 internships that will commence May 1, 2023. Current UBC graduate students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to confirm the eligibility requirements and apply.

Successful candidates work under the guidance of a mentor at one of our partner organizations, and are immersed in real world learning where they can apply their research skills and contribute to advancing sustainability and climate action across the region. Each Scholar receives $25 per hour to complete 250 hours of work.

We will also have former scholars and mentors there to answer your questions about what you can expect as a Scholar and what kinds of opportunities the program offers in terms of skills and job prospects.

SSHRC Talent Award

The SSHRC Talent Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual who, on April 1, 2023, holds a SSHRC doctoral or postdoctoral fellowship or scholarship. The Talent Award ($50,000 value) is given to an individual who maintains academic excellence, has a talent for research and knowledge mobilization, and has demonstrated clear potential to be a future leader within and/or outside the academic sector.

The Talent Award may be taken up as a fellowship to fund the recipient’s doctoral or postdoctoral research over a one-year period, or may be used, within one year of receiving the award, as a grant to support research, knowledge mobilization or other research-related activities. At least 10 per cent of the award funds must be used to promote the recipient’s research achievements.

Eligibility: A nominee must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada at the time of nomination, must be an active social sciences and humanities researcher or student, and must hold a SSHRC doctoral or postdoctoral fellowship or scholarship on April 1, 2023.

Application Deadline: Feb 3, 2023.

Nomination Deadline: 24 February 2023 at 4:00 pm PT.  Graduate programs should set an internal application deadine for their applicants several weeks before this date to select nominees for which they will prepare the nomination package.

Note to graduate programs: UBC can nominate one applicant to the national stage of the competition.  One Talent Award is awarded annually by SSHRC from the nominations submitted by Canadian universities.  Departments should therefore nominate applicants who they believe will be competitive with the top nominees Canada-wide.
