The Pacific Regional Society of Soil Science is now accepting applications for two soil science student awards.

The Les Lavkulich Graduate Student Award in Soil Science (one award of $5000) and the Art Bomke Undergraduate Student Award in Soil

Science (one award of $3000) will be awarded to students on the basis of academic achievement, research proposal (for graduate students), leadership/community service, and letters of recommendation. The application deadline is March 1, 2022.

Sustainability Scholars paid summer internships

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – SUSTAINABILITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM (PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS) 

The UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) is pleased to offer UBC graduate students the opportunity to work on paid sustainability-related research projects.

We are currently accepting applications for over 80 positions that will commence May 2, 2022. Current UBC graduate students from all academic disciplines and all UBC campuses are encouraged to confirm the eligibility requirements and apply.

Successful candidates will work under the guidance of a mentor at the sponsoring partner organization, and are immersed in real world learning where they can apply their research skills and contribute to advancing  sustainability goals and climate action.

Esri Canada GIS Scholarship 2022

Position Title: Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA)          

Faculty: Land & Food Systems/Forestry

Proposed Start Date: February 1st, 2022

Term of Employment: This position is for 91 hours (approximately 7 hour/week for 13 weeks with flexibility on start and end date and number of hours per week to accommodate student schedules and exams)

Rate of Pay: $33.14 + statutory pay

Job Description:

As part of the project team, the Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA) will support the creation of a new Open Educational Resource. Writing Place: A Scholarly Communication Open Textbook for Forestry and Land & Food Systems will draw on and adapt existing open educational resources, as well as create new content to support a common vision across course sections between two faculties. This Open Text will provide carefully scaffolded discipline-specific content, interactive multimedia, student writing examples, and engagement/extension activities relevant to the disciplines of Land & Food Systems and Forestry and the communities these disciplines have partnerships with. This text will equip students with the skills they need to meaningfully contribute to scholarly conversations in their disciplines, as well as support them in considering how these skills might be used to effectively communicate with Indigenous and settler communities beyond the university.

 

Job Duties:

  • Find, adapt and improve existing images, interactive multimedia, student writing examples and engagement/extension activities
  • Co-design and create new interactive multimedia content (e.g. videos, LaTeX, glossary and H5P) and student extension activities
  • Source and create attributions for images and media content
  • Compose alt text and other accessibility features
  • Assist with licensing, testing and final proofreading
  • Participate in weekly team meetings with the project team

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Effective at problem solving and troubleshooting to efficiently advance a project
  • Ability to communicate at a high level with all team members on the progress and anticipated completion of components of the project
  • Mastery of the English language—fluency in professional, academic and popular uses of English
  • Experience in digital storytelling
  • Understanding of design principles and practices
  • Experience working with content management platforms, specifically WordPress or Pressbooks is an asset

 

Supervision:

  • The GAA will be directly supervised by Lindsay Cuff, Assistant Professor of Teaching in LFS/Forestry
  • The GAA will take part in regular weekly meetings with the project team

 

Training and Mentorship Provided:

The OER project team, including the GAA, will receive training from the UBC Open Education Team in the following:

  • Creative Commons and copyright
  • Pressbooks and H5P integration
  • Identifying attribution details of OERs and appropriate attribution style
  • Using the attribution tracking sheets for the project
  • Style guide application
