November 2020 Graduation Dates To Know

Dear Graduate Program Staff,

Can you please remind all Graduate Students that are hoping to have their degree granted in November, with the option to attend the November congregation ceremony, that the application for graduation will be available on the Student Service Centre until Sunday, September 13, 2020.

A late application form for graduation will be available on our website early next week for students that have missed the Student Service Centre deadline.  Please note that this form is for Graduate Students only.

Please advise students that are hoping to graduate in November 2020, that it is very important that they apply for graduation as soon as possible, and should not wait until they submit their final thesis to G+PS or complete the program requirements for non-thesis programs.

Last day for graduation applications to be submitted to Enrolment Services using the Student Service Centre by all students expecting to graduate in November 2020.

Friday, October 23, 2020

Last day for late applications for graduation to be submitted to Enrolment Services (via our form off of the G+PS website) by all students expecting to graduate in November 2020.

Last day for final master’s theses and doctoral dissertations to be approved by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for November 2020 degree granting and Congregation. Must be approved and accepted by 4:00 pm.

Last day for students to complete all program requirements (including major papers) for non-thesis master’s degrees for November 2020 degree granting and Congregation.  All program completion memo’s must have this date for their students to be eligible to graduate.

Week of October 26 – 30, 2020

Graduation list forwarded to programs (from G+PS) to begin program requirement checking.

Friday, November 6, 2020

Last day to finalize graduation lists.  Final grades and program completion must be completed by this date.

Week of November 9 – 13, 2020

Finalized lists get forward to the G+PS Policy Committee for review.

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

Senate meets to approve candidates for November 2020 graduation.

Wednesday to Friday, November 25 – 27, 2020

The published graduation ceremony dates.  Subject to change depending on whether this is going to be in-person or virtual.

Reminder for CGS-D applicants to submit their application by the deadline

Dear CGS-D applicants,

Please be reminded (Tri-Agency Doctoral applicants (ie. CIHR CGS-D, NSERC PGS-D, NSERC CGS-D, SSHRC CGS-D, SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship) that you must submit your application (click submit in the application system) by the application deadline (September 15 at 12:00 noon PDT).  This step is required in order for your application to be considered.  Late application submissions will not be considered and will be ruled ineligible.

How to submit a Tri-Agency Doctoral application:

CIHR

  • On the task list page, go to “Consent and Submit” and click on “Submit to Research Institution”.
  • The system will not allow the application to be submitted until both references are submitted.  It is the applicants responsibility to check in with their referees (“sponsors”) in advance of the application deadline if references are missing. Late references will not be accepted.
  • ResearchNet will not permit the application to be submitted if UBC’s application deadline of September 15 at 12:00 noon PDT has passed.

NSERC

  • On ‘Portfolio’ page, click “Verify”.  This step will indicate if there are any incomplete sections in the application.  Then, click “Submit”.
  • The system will not allow the application to be submitted until both references (“Reports on the Applicant”) are submitted.  It is the applicants responsibility to check in with their referees in advance of the application deadline if references are missing.  Late references will not be accepted.
  • Note: The NSERC system is not able to list UBC’s application deadline, but the date and time of submission is recorded (i.e., every application is time-stamped).  To be eligible, applicants are required to submit their application in the system by September 15 at 12:00 noon PDT.

SSHRC

MFRE Speaker Series: Lyft Commodity: Cash Trading and Opportunities

The second MFRE seminar of this academic year will be presenting Nima Salmani, Director of Lyft Commodity Trading. Nima will give an introduction to commodity trading in the agricultural sector. Students are to gain an insight into the practice of purchasing, selling, and moving the physical commodity from a practitioner’s point of view.

About Nima Salmani

Nima has been involved in the North American agricultural commodity trade for years. He managed the Western Canadian market primarily, focusing on feed commodities, position trading, and mentoring/managing junior traders. For Lyft Commodity, he continues in those roles as Director and Founder while exploring new markets in different commodities and regions.

 

Next to his trading activities, he consults on negotiation matters across cultures internal, as well as external, to private and public organizations. His experience includes new client acquisition in the private banking and estate planning sectors as well as projects for the public on a municipal and federal level in Europe.
