LTS News and Volunteer Opportunities – Sept 14

Standard

Let’s Talk Science Information Sessions

Let’s Talk Science is a national science outreach organization consisting of university-specific, independently operated chapters. UBC Let’s Talk Science volunteers are role models for young Canadians. As a volunteer, you will meet like-minded people, make a difference in your community, be eligible for prestigious awards and rekindle your love of science.

We set you up for success by providing training, activity kits, funding and materials. There are several (up to 10!) different programs run by UBC Let’s Talk Science that you can learn more about by RSVPing to one of our virtual info sessions on September 30, October 2 and October 7: https://forms.gle/d1XBrJAUSFqoETGBA

Already know you want to volunteer?
If you sign up for our newsletter and register on the portal, you will receive biweekly or monthly volunteering opportunities: https://volunteer.letstalkscience.ca/Login.aspx?returnurl=%2f

Volunteers needed for the Teacher Partnership Program

The Teacher Partnership Program pairs a volunteer (a.k.a. the scientist) with a teacher in the Vancouver community. The scientist will virtually visit the teacher’s classroom throughout the school year and leads the students in fun activities. This is the core program of LTS in which the science topics are chosen by the volunteer and educator together. For information or to sign up, contact Mariposa at partnership@ubclts.com

===================================

Volunteer wanted: Graphic Design

Let’s Talk Science is seeking a motivated volunteer to develop digital content for our social media/other platforms to grow our presence online! Previous experience is an asset, but not required. National office supplies templates for communication documents. For information or to sign up, contact Morgan at volunteer@ubclts.com or morgan@ubclts.com

Workshops: Introduction to R and the R Tidyverse

Standard

My name is Gil and I’m the workshop coordinator for ECOSCOPE.
We will be holding a workshop that we think would be of great interest to LFS.

Do you have large, unmanageable data? Do you wish to create compelling data visualizations? Do you want to break free from Excel? If so, then come learn to quickly tame your raw data and generate publication-quality figures with ease in the R tidyverse workshop (Sept 28 and 30, 1-4 PM).

If you need a refresher before the workshop, there is a two-hour Introduction to R on Sept 23, 2-4 PM. For information on these and other upcoming events, visit ecoscope.ubc.ca/events.
