UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference

Standard

The UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference 2020 is scheduled to take place on March 14th from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the UBC Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The main goal of this conference is to advance dialogue around gender inclusion and equality in STEM fields, specifically with regards to women and other gender-oppressed communities, and equip attendees with the inspiration and motivation to tackle the STEM gender gap in their own spheres. Topics will include the stigma and bias women and gender-oppressed communities face when pursuing careers and education in STEM, how gender-oppressed communities have made a positive impact on the world through STEM, how the gender gap in STEM can best be addressed through policy and innovation, and the societal, health and economic impacts of addressing this gap.

Featured speakers:

  • Dr. Steph van Willigenburg, Professor of Mathematics, UBC
  • Dhalie Patara, Director of Finance & Paloma Corvalan, Director of Youth Engagement with Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST)
  • Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul, Associate Professor, Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women and Gender-Diverse, UBC Faculty of Medicine & Physical Therapy
  • Selena Wilson, Principal Project Manager at Mott MacDonald

Funded summer opportunity for graduate students, postdocs, and early career faculty: Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute

Standard

I am writing to share the news about an exciting funded summer opportunity for graduate students, early career academics, industry researchers, and artists of all types. The Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI for short) fosters collaboration among scholars and storytellers interested in the origin, nature, and future of intelligences. You can read more about DISI here: www.diverseintelligencessummer.com.

The basic idea behind DISI is simple. We bring together a variety of thinkers interested in the study of mind, cognition, and intelligence for several weeks of transdisciplinary exploration. We seek applicants for our FELLOWS program (graduate students, postdocs, new faculty, and industry researchers) and our STORYTELLERS program (artists, filmmakers, podcasters, writers, etc.). We hope that this vibrant community will work together to develop new ways of engaging with big questions about intelligence, cognition, and the mind. All accepted fellows and storytellers will receive funding.

DISI will take place at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, from June 28 to July 18. This is a beautiful seaside location, easily accessible from Edinburgh International Airport, and a picturesque train journey North from London. In addition to lectures and discussions, DISI offers participants the opportunity to develop collaborative interdisciplinary research projects with support from faculty and staff.

I would be grateful if you could forward this announcement to talented folks in your department who might be interested. In both the FELLOW and STORYTELLER tracks, we are looking for creative, open-minded participants who want to take intellectual risks and break down disciplinary barriers in the spirit of dialogue and discovery.

Application review will begin on March 1st. Application portals can be found at www.diverseintelligencessummer.com/apply

If potential applicants have any questions, they can reach out to Hilda Loury, Associate Director of DISI, at disi@ucla.edu.

Thanks so much for helping us build an exciting new intellectual community!

P.S. If you could confirm with me that you have shared this message, that would VERY much appreciated 🙂

All the best,
Hilda Loury
Associate Director of DISI
