We need to know what this population wants to create the best possible opportunities for participating in recreation. We’ve launched a survey to hear what’s needed and we’re seeking your help in distributing this survey to students. Students who complete the survey will have the option to be entered into a draw to win one of the following prizes: $50 and $100 Visa® Gift Cards, Fit Bit®, $100 voucher for UBC Recreation Services, or a lululemon® yoga mat. Equity Inclusion Project Background:

Findings from the 2018 Undergraduate Experience Survey (UES) indicate that UBC Asian female students are underrepresented in recreational participation and have lower rates of physical activity. To address this discrepancy and encourage exercise, the Physical Activity Office is developing an initiative to address barriers promote physical activity for Asian female students on the UBC Vancouver Campus. We are conducting surveys with UBC students who self-identify as Asian female in order to identify the barriers and facilitating factors for participating in physical activity and recreation on campus. This information is crucial in helping to develop programs and opportunities using information directly provided by students.~

Head of Laboratory Needed 

Head of Laboratory is needed for a new analytical company based in Vancouver, BC.

This is a unique opportunity to grow with our company as we emerge from a new and exciting

industry in Canada.

The Head of Laboratory will be responsible for running, troubleshooting and analyzing samples

with a GC, HPLC and/or ICP system; writing and reviewing standard operating procedures

(SOPs); and performing laboratory procedures including sampling, chromatographic and

material assays.

 

Qualifications:

• Master’s or PhD in Plant Science, Analytical Chemistry or a related field.

• Experience with creating statistical methods of data analysis.

• Experience with the following instrumentation: HPLC, GCMS, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS,

ICPMS.

• Experience with method development and optimization.

• Experience with instrument maintenance and trouble-shooting.

Eligibility: are you a student who self-identifies as female, and Chinese (including Hong Kong and Macao) and/or Taiwanese?

KIN 465: Interculturalism, Health & Physical Activity, in collaboration with UBC’s Physical Activity office through the SEEDS Sustainability Program are researching the facilitators and barriers to physical activity for students who self-identify as Chinese (including Hong Kong and Macau), and/or Taiwanese.  

Three student project teams are taking on this research by have three different focused approaches. The results of this research will inform UBC how to improve their offerings of recreation events to better encourage physical exercise.

1. Environmental, Situational & Communications Barriers
Do you ever feel like you want to exercise but simply have no time? Have you skipped out on exercise sessions because you had too much academic work to complete? Our focus group will provide participants the opportunity to share personal recommendations for improving physical activity participation at UBC. The focus group will take place on either November 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 6th.

2. Cultural, Gender-based and Social Barriers

In collaboration with UBC SEEDS, the purpose of our project is to explore and understand the perceived cultural, gender-based, and social barriers to physical activity for UBC students self-identifying as female and Chinese (including Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Macao).  The students’ experiences, ideas, and values will be collected through a focus group session that will last approximately 1.5 hours.

3. Time Mapping

It has been found that female Asian students are currently underrepresented in recreational participation and physical activity at UBC. This project will be investigating time-related barriers to physical activity faced by self-identified female Chinese undergraduate students at UBC.
