INTERNAL Deadline September 19, 2018 – This is a firm deadline.  We will not accept any applications (missing documents) after this deadline.  In addition, incomplete applications will not be considered.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all supporting documentations, including transcripts and reference letters, are received by the deadline.

If you are considering applying for a doctoral-level Tri-Council and/or Affiliated Fellowship, please NOTIFY me of your intention by September 10.  The LFS Graduate Office will be experiencing very busy times during September and October.  In order to ensure adequate administrative support for this award competition, it will help us a great deal if we know in advance of your intention to apply so that we can set realistic and workable deadlines.

UBC Affiliated Fellowships:

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated NSERC and SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Doctoral competitions. Students who submit an NSERC or SSHRC application to their graduate program are eligible for open Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. (To be considered for criteria-based affiliated fellowship(s), students should submit this checklist (https://www.grad.ubc.ca/sites/default/files/awards/awards_affiliated_criteria-based_2018-08-16.docx) with their NSERC or SSHRC application to their graduate program.) Those applying only for Vanier CGS or CIHR Doctoral Research Award must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered.

SSHRC and NSERC CGS Doctoral Awards:

Applicants applying through UBC will either be:

• currently registered at (or were registered at during the year of application), or are on an approved leave of absence from, a degree program at UBC
• not currently registered at UBC; or are registered, but not in a degree program; and have completed all of the requirements for a degree program from UBC since 1 January 2018

Waitlist registration is now open for the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) October 13, 14, 20 2018.  The ISW is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence.  It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.  Join the thousands of students who have taken this workshop. The ISW is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation. In addition, graduate students in STEM departments are eligible to become CIRTL associates upon completion of the workshop.    

IMPORTANT: The workshop runs from 8:15am-5:00pm. Please note you must attend all three days for the complete duration of the workshop, i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop.  Please find attached the policy for registering in an ISW.

The UBC Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program matches volunteers or pair of students from UBC into K-12 classrooms in Vancouver. The volunteer(s) lead the class in hands-on/minds-on science activities as a means to engage children and youth and get them interested in the sciences.

No experience necessary, everyone is welcome. You will be trained before you go to classrooms!

Expectations of Volunteers

• Rank your preference of teachers to get matched (teacher list will be sent in Oct)
• Make 3 visits to your partner school throughout the year 2018-2019
• Log your visits on the Let’s Talk Science Portal
• If you are new to TPP, attend mandatory training on Oct 13th, 2018 (11am-1pm MSL 101) if you cannot attend still sign up but note that in your application.

 Orientation 2018 G+PS Resources for Grad Students

Thank you for sharing your orientation programming details, which have given us a good idea of the topics that are covered in your individual programs, and something to reflect on when we brainstorm on future G+PS orientation planning.  

We put together an information packet of G+PS resources that aim to provide support for graduate students on their UBC grad journey, attached. Please feel free to share this document with your graduate students during your orientation events. 

As you know, G+PS has worked closely with the Graduate Student Society and International Student Development on Orientation programming that begins on Thursday, August 30 with our Welcome events, and continues throughout September and October with various workshops and other events. The Program is available for download, which includes event schedules, maps, a list of participants in the Campus Resource and Activity Fair, upcoming events hosted by the GSS and G+PS, and other great resources.
