Volunteer opportunity for LFS students

Standard

My name is Aida and I’m reaching out on behalf of the AMS Bike Co-op. We are currently looking for volunteers to support Bici Libre, a program that provides temporary foreign agricultural workers across the Lower Mainland with access to bicycles, which are often their only means of autonomous transportation. We thought this would be a good opportunity for LFS students, since it’s a great way to gain perspective into the complex world of agriculture, migration and mobility. These are some of the ways students can get involved:

  • Outreach: in April, we’ll be starting the outreach component of Bici Libre. This involves travelling with a group of AMS Bike Co-op staff and volunteers to various farms across the Lower Mainland to provide bikes, tune-ups and accessories to agricultural workers that would otherwise lack access to autonomous transportation. The clinics are generally on Sundays (though sometimes on Saturdays), and tend to be a full day commitment.
  • Translation: we’re always looking for folks to help us translate from English to Spanish and to attend clinics and provide linguistic support to mechanics.
  • Building bikes: on Volunteer Day (Wednesdays from 11am-5pm) we build bikes for folks that wouldn’t otherwise have access, particularly for Bici Libre.
  • Administrative support: we sometimes need help with administrative tasks related to Bici Libre. This includes data entry, translation and blog writing, among other tasks.

If you think there are students in your department that may be interested, please let me know and I’d be happy to provide more information or do a brief presentation. Please also feel free to pass this information onto anyone that may be interested.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Aida–
