Community of Practice: Qualitative Research

Standard

Are you conducting qualitative research and interested in discussing paradigms, methods and analysis?

We are a group of social science graduate students in the Animal Welfare Program. Our research areas are diverse; however, we share the goal of understanding more about the people who care for animals in settings such as farms and laboratories using qualitative research approaches. We began meeting bi-weekly in October 2016 to discuss a broad range of topics such as research paradigms, methods, and validity, and also include areas of interest germane to our own research projects. We include reading materials to supplement the discussion and maintain a database of literature based on these materials.

At this point, we are interested in broadening our discussion group to include more diverse topics and perspectives and to meet other researchers outside of our program, and would like to do this by developing a Community of Practice (COP) group with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology. We envision a group that includes students, faculty, and staff, and meets regularly to discuss topics in qualitative research that further group members’ learning.

For our next step in developing this COP, we’d like to invite other graduate students within LFS to join our group. We will be meeting on the first and third Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm. We will meet in our office (MCML 180) as long as space allows! Our first meeting will be Thursday Oct. 19, and the meeting agenda will involve each student giving an update of their current research projects and allow an opportunity for discussion.

If you would like to come, please email katie.koralesky@alumni.ubc.ca to confirm. We hope to see you on the 19th!

Thank you Lia, please let me know if you have any questions!
