GRAD STUDENT VOLUNTEERS – Pod Leader Recruitment for Let’s Talk Science!

Standard

Scientific Methods and Research Techniques (SMaRT) Program – Pod Leader Recruitment!

The SMaRT program is a joint-initiative between Let’s Talk Science and UBC Community Learning Initiative (CLI). Our aim is to enrich the scientific knowledge of Grade 5-7 elementary school students in East Vancouver schools by taking the lead on facilitating fun and engaging science experiments.

This year we will be offering the program to 18 classrooms – as such, we have space for 18 pod leaders. Each pod visits the same classroom four times throughout Jan-Apr 2018 and consists of one pod leader (grad student/post doc) + 3-5 pod members (undergrads).

What will you do as a pod leader?

Term 1: Attend 2 training sessions, receive a kit including supplies and a manual that outlines the experiments that you will facilitate, and work with 3-5 UBC science undergraduate students who will be members of your pod.

Term 2: Deliver four 1.5 hour activities to a Grade 5-7 class as a pod

Mandatory Training Sessions

You are required to attend two mandatory trainings, one with other pod leaders only and another combined with pod members. BREAKFAST will be provided for both training sessions. Below are the schedules:

Pod Leaders only: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 19TH 10AM-12PM @ Centre for Brain Health near UBC Hospital (Room TBA)

Pod Leaders + Pod Members: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 25TH 10AM-12PM @ Centre for Brain Health near UBC Hospital (Room TBA)

Please note that the visit time is a regular time slot and could be Mon-Fri between 9-10.30am, 10.30am-12pm, or 1-2.30pm. Your visit time will be on the same day of the week and at the same time of the day for each of the 4 sessions. These time slots are the actual time you will spend in class, they do NOT include travel to and from the school (budget for an hour max), 10-15 mins preparation before your visit, or clean-up after your visit.

Upon careful consideration, you can register to be a pod leader using the following Google form:

THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS NOVEMBER 17TH @ NOON

The success and effectiveness of the SMaRT program is heavily dependent on enthusiastic pod leaders and we’re excited about the possibility of partnering with you in the coming year!
