Description: Learn about the life-cycle of plastic and its implications to the ecosystem and human health. Discover how The Ocean Legacy Foundation has teamed up with LUSH to turn plastic pollution into recycled packaging and find out how you can help The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup keep our beaches clean! This event is run in partnership with the Vancouver chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, a global environmental non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

Event: Beluga Whales, Microplastics and an Inuit Community | Ocean Matters Lecture

Date: Tuesday 27th February
Time: 7pm (doors 6.30pm)
Location: The Vancouver Aquarium
Description: The remote Inuit community, living in the artic hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, are worried about how microplastic pollution in the ocean could harm their health and threaten their way of life. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles found throughout the ocean and are eaten by fish, birds and other marine animals. This is very troubling because we don’t know exactly how this plastic affects the health and behaviour of the these animals. Microplastic pollution poses a grave threat to the Inuit in Tuktoyaktuk as rely on fish and marine mammals to feed themselves, and as a vital part of their traditional culture. Rhiannon Moore, a researcher in the Ocean Wise Pollution team, will share her experience researching ocean microplastics in the artic, and show how we can stay optimistic while facing this emerging global conservation issue.
