GSS Annual General Meeting-2018

Why an AGM matters to you ?

http://gss.ubc.ca/news/why-an-agm-matters-to-you/ An Annual General Meeting isn’t sexy. I get that. Most GSS members are probably more excited by the social and professional development events the society runs, but that doesn’t mean the AGM isn’t important to all of you. We’re currently in the process of electing next year’s GSS Executive Officers. I mention that, not just to encourage you all to vote, but because one of the most important things about the GSS is that it is run by graduate students for graduate students.  It is your society, and the elected officers are there to promote and protect the academic, social, and recreational interests of the members. Although we have regular council meetings the AGM is one of the best opportunities for UBC graduate students to help shape the future of the GSS.

At this year’s AGM we’re discussing some of the most important parts of the GSS’s work. One of the topics under the discussion will be how graduate students benefit from our fees paid to the AMS and what student services could be improved for graduate students. We’ll also be looking at student contributions to the GSS AMS Health and Dental Plan.

But even aside from these topics, the AGM is a forum to raise any issues that matter to you as a UBC graduate student and a member of the GSS. This could be supervision, mental health, transport or access to social spaces. Your involvement with the future of the GSS shouldn’t stop once elections are over and the views and feedback you provide at the AGM will help the elected officers decide the priorities of the society for the next year.
