Return of the Sea Otter: The Story of the Animal that Evaded Extinction on the Pacific Coast

Rhode Island-based writer Todd McLeish has been writing about wildlife and environmental issues for more than 20 years. His 4th and newest book is The Return of The Sea Otter’

In his newest book, Todd McLeish journeys along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska to track the status, health, habits, personality, and viability of sea otters – the appealing animals unique to the Pacific that were hunted to near extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Todd shares stories of his adventures and outlines the natural history of these adorable marine mammals – often seen floating on their backs and holding hands – that play a vital role in maintaining the health of the kelp forest ecosystem. The Truth About Everyday Plastics

What happens to your fleece jacket in the laundry and that plastic bottle when it is empty?

Stephen Chastain, an Ocean Wise scientist, will look at four everyday household items. He will examine why and how our use and disposal of these items is damaging the environment and how this relates to large-scale global issues.

He will discuss how he explores the world of microplastics under the microscope and the research that Ocean Wise is doing to learn about the processes that are causing these problems. This research is helping us all to do something, whether it is small changes in our daily routine or ways in which we redesign our approach to plastics as a society.
