Message to students re: climate strike

Climate Strike

Many of our students are interested in joining the global climate strike events next Friday, Sept. 27.

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems strongly believes that these grassroots actions are making a striking impact in raising awareness of the climate crisis. As we see an acceleration of climate-related issues happening around the world, I believe this is the most compelling issue of our time that our faculty must help to address.

For students interested in participating in the climate strike, at events on-campus or off-campus, please remember to make arrangements with your instructors in advance to review how to make up lost time.

Each individual course instructor may decide whether to keep their classes on Sept. 27 or cancel them to allow their students to participate in the strike. Instructors look at many factors when deciding if they have the flexibility to cancel classes.

The University encourages all students and instructors to review and follow UBC ’s policy on academic concessions:

We are committed to providing leadership on critical global issues around climate change and its relationship to human health and a sustainable food supply. Thus, I am proud to see the major steps we have taken in these areas through our research, and through the activities of our engaged student body.

Sincerely,

Rickey Yada
Dean
