Job Description:
The Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Soil Fertility and Agronomy at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins on April 1, 2020, or as soon as possible after that. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The position will contribute to teaching, research, service and outreach functions grounded in the Department’s pillars of sustainable food production systems, soil and environmental health, greenhouse gas and climate change mitigation and adaptation, and seasonally-frozen soils and environments.

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be a core contributor to the agronomic expertise in the Department
(www.umanitoba.ca/afs/soil_science) and FAFS, and will develop an externally-funded field research program focusing on the effects of nutrient management on crop yield, crop quality, agricultural sustainability and environmental quality. The successful applicant will benefit from excellent research facilities and the intense dedication to research, teaching, and outreach by Department members. Anticipated establishment of an NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in 4R Nutrient Management provides the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to be a member of a team to strengthen the Department as a leader in soil fertility, crop nutrition and nutrient management in Canada. The Department has excellent research infrastructure and facilities, including the Ian N. Morrison Research Farm, a 406-acre facility located 70 km southwest of Winnipeg; and the Glenlea Research Station, a 1,000-acre facility 20 km south of Winnipeg, as well as successful cooperation with farmers for siting field trials across Manitoba. The Department also benefits from collaborations with other institutions and with provincial and federal departments, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, which has two major centres in Manitoba: the Cereal Research Centre located at Morden, and the Brandon Research and Development Centre. The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is home to the National Centre for Livestock and Environment (NCLE, https://umanitoba.ca/faculties/afs/ncle/index.html), which engages in multi-disciplinary, multi-agency research partnerships focused on furthering the long term economic and environmental sustainability of integrated livestock and crop production systems.

Qualifications:
Qualified applicants must possess a Ph.D. in soil science, agronomy or a closely related discipline with a focus on soil fertility, crop nutrition, and/or nutrient management; a record of excellence in field research as demonstrated by scholarly publications; the potential for developing an exciting and impactful field research program, including supervision of graduate students; demonstrated ability or potential for high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching; and excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to engage with a wide audience, including farmers and the agricultural industry. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in soil fertility and related subjects in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS).
