We are hiring a SEEDS Sustainability Projects Coordinator student position (25-30hours/week, Nov 20-April 21,). Core job function is to develop and coordinate applied student-led sustainability research and interdisciplinary partnerships to advance UBC’s operational sustainability and wellbeing commitments, with a core focus on campus urban biodiversity and forestry planning work, and climate action commitments.

Preference for graduate student candidates from Forestry, IRES, LFS (applied biology, land and water systems), Science/Ecology and Geography. We will also consider experienced senior undergraduate students.

Job Title:  SEEDS Sustainability Project Coordinator (Job ID: #883222, apply via CareersOnline)

Department: SEEDS Sustainability Program, Campus + Community Planning, VP External Relations

Appointment Duration/Hours: Nov 30th, 2020 to April 30, 2021 (25-30 hours per week)

Wage: $22.23/hr

Position Type: Graduate Research/Academic Assistant (GRA/GAA)

Education: Preference for a current student enrolled in a Masters or PhD Program (Forestry, Science/Ecology (Botany, Zoology, Applied Biology), Geography, Public Policy, Landscape Architecture)

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and coordinate applied student-led sustainability research and interdisciplinary partnerships to advance UBC’s operational sustainability and wellbeing commitments, with a core focus on campus urban biodiversity and forestry planning work, and climate action commitments.
  • Priority research areas include:  Urban Biodiversity, Urban Forestry, Climate Action (Mitigation and Adaptation), Ecological and Human Wellbeing.

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct research and analyze campus sustainability plans to identify applied research opportunities
  • Coordinate full project life-cycle from scoping, ideation, initiation, monitoring and closing
  • Meet with program operational, academic and community clients to create research proposals that can be integrated with suitable senior level UBC undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Support interdisciplinary partnership development

 

Skills and Experience:
– Familiarity with a broad range of sustainability practices and research, esp. urban biodiversity and forestry, climate mitigation and adaptation

– Ability to think strategically, creatively, and apply systems perspectives
– Excellent organizational and time management skills and strong attention to detail

– Experience with project management or coordination
– Experience with community-based action research and applied research
– Experience with performing secondary research and interdisciplinary work
– Experience with geospatial data management, analysis, and visualization is considered an asset
– Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information System) and/or other analytical mapping programs considered an asset
