The UBC SEEDS Sustainability Program, in collaboration with UBC Food Services, is looking for a Climate-Friendly Food System Data Analyst undergraduate or graduate student research assistant position to conduct data-oriented research related to the first UBC’s Climate-Friendly Food Labeling Data System to inform UBC’s upcoming Climate Action Plan 2030 and achieve a 50% reduction of food systems’ GHG emissions by 2030 from 2019 levels.

  1. Climate-Friendly Food System Data Analyst (Posting ID: #956686)

Work Period/Hours: August 15 to September 30 2022 (Total 150 hours, approx. 30 hours per week)

Wage: $22.67  |  Position Type: Undergraduate or Graduate Research Assistant (URA/GRA)

Core Job Responsibilities: Conduct applied research that can support the advancement of the UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 target to achieve a 50% reduction of food systems’ GHG emissions by 2030 from 2019 levels. Within the 7 bold actions defined to achieve UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 target, the candidate’s work is part of Developing campus-wide Climate-Friendly Food System (CFFS) definition, mandatory CFFS labeling, and a toolkit to increase sustainable dietary choices and habits. The primary focus of the candidate’s role will be to: 1) conduct research including a data assessment (current attributes evaluated: GHG emissions, Nitrogen and Water footprint) of UBC Food Services’ three main residence dining halls (Open Kitchen, Feast, Gather) fixed menu items; 2) evaluate the feasibility to assess menu items of the AMS Food and Beverages’ Flavor Lab in the Nest building, through the first UBC’s Climate-Friendly Food Labeling Data System at UBC. A graduate student has developed the data assessment methodology through a previous community-based research project led by the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES), the  SEEDS Sustainability Program in collaboration with UBC Food Services. The selected candidate will receive support from the  SEEDS Climate Action and Food System Coordinator, under the supervision of a faculty member from the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES).

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong background in computer science and/or data science management. Programming experience and the ability to integrate different systems are highly preferable.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to think through number integration.
  • Strong knowledge with data extraction, evaluation, and manipulation.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong prioritization skills and ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently is a must.
  • Ability to work independently, while enthusiastic for challenge and change in a team environment is critical.

Familiarity with environmental science, food systems (GHG emissions, etc.) and climate change is a strong advantage.

Knowledge requirements include: 

  • Python programming language (Python 3)
  • Jupyter Notebook; Version Control (Git/GitHub)
  • Reproducible Data Analysis Workflow
  • Data Structure and Visualization

The candidate must have the capability to understand data mining processes and have analytical skills to analyze existing database structures.
