Join the SEEDS Sustainability Program! The SEEDS Sustainability Program is an internationally recognized Campus as Living Laboratory initiative. Through interdisciplinary partnerships and applied student-led research, SEEDS informs policy and planning work related to UBC sustainability and wellbeing priorities and practices and creates scalable solutions to societal issues.

The UBC SEEDS Sustainability Program is looking for a Climate Emergency Engagement Coordinator Senior undergraduate or graduate Work Learn student with a strong commitment to sustainability to support engagement through a broad range of applied student research related to the Climate Emergency and Sustainable Food Systems. This work will help mobilize SEEDS student-led research and interdisciplinary collaborations to inform and advance intersectional areas related to UBC’s  Climate Action Plan 2030 (CAP 2030) and emerging circular economy work managed by the UBC’s SEEDS (Social Ecological Economic Development Studies) Sustainability Program in the Sustainability & Engineering department with a focus on Climate-Friendly Food systems, including knowledge translation and mobilization of the research and partnership outcomes.

Work Period/Hours: September 1 to November 30, 2022 (Total 300 hours, approx. 10 hours per week)

Core Job Responsibilities: Lead and support various engagement initiatives focused on Climate-Friendly Food Systems and intersectional areas related to UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 (CAP 2030) and emerging circular economy work managed by the UBC’s SEEDS (Social Ecological Economic Development Studies) Sustainability Program in the Sustainability & Engineering department.

The primary focus of the candidate’s role will be to:

Mobilize the outcomes of SEEDS student research and interdisciplinary collaborations on Climate-Friendly Food Systems (CFFS) to support the advancing of UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 food actions and targets and supporting intersectional policy commitments by:

  1. Fostering effective knowledge exchange activities to mobilize SEEDS CFFS research and collaborations into actions that can inform campus practices and policies that advance climate action in our food system.
  2. Translating and disseminating CFFS research and partnership outcomes in accessible, innovative and visually engaging ways (e.g. CFFS Toolkit, Case Studies, Stories, Story Map, Data Portal, etc.).
  3. Assist with digital and in-person knowledge exchange events that involve campus operational staff, community partners, students and faculty involved in climate and food sustainability and security work.
  4. Provide general support as needed to SEEDS Applied Research Coordinators and Climate-Friendly Food champions across campus.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to create lasting change at the institutional level, helping to foster both community and organizational change.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong background in communication, marketing, project coordination.
  • Familiarity with environmental science, food systems (GHG emissions, etc.), circular economy principles, and climate change are strong advantages.
  • Quick learner with the ability to think strategically, creatively, and out of the box.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative.
  • Strong prioritization skills and the ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently are a must.
  • The ability to work independently, while enthusiastic about challenges and change in a team environment is critical.
  • Experience in meeting facilitation and fostering multi-stakeholder relations and event organization.

Knowledge requirements include: 

  • Eligible for UBC’s Work Learn Program
  • Excellent communications skills: professional correspondence, public speaking, and presentation efficiency.
  • Expertise in creative graphic design, social media content, and storytelling techniques.
  • Ability to work well independently with little supervision.
  • Strong capability to understand previous food and climate related research proficiently in order to effectively translate and mobilize the work in various knowledge exchange activities.
