The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a competition that supports graduate students in communicating and presenting their research in succinct and engaging ways. Participants have just three minutes to explain the significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.

This could be your year to shine! Reach out to your department to participate in one of the departmental heats, or register for one of the campus-wide open heats. Students participating can sign up to receive coaching sessions, tips on communicating their research and have their slide reviewed in advance of their presentation.

Connie Marples has been receiving food-oriented awards for over 20 years and continues to win awards with Boosh, where she’s driving plant-food innovation and setting a standard of high-quality and healthy frozen meals. Her foray into the food industry was not by chance, as she has always enjoyed sharing new recipes and healthier alternatives with family and friends for years. She would often deliver frozen or hot meals within her close circle who encouraged her to expand her great flavours to a broader audience.  This led her to create small batches in her tiny kitchen and distributed weekly to local customers all over Greater Vancouver. The experience was invaluable as the locals, inspired by her desire to provide healthier meat alternatives, offered valuable feedback, which helped in the growth and expansion phase of Boosh. What started as making dishes for friends in a tiny kitchen in Vancouver has grown to a publicly traded company with Boosh Food in grocery stores all over Canada. America is next.

Connie Marples is the founder and president of Boosh Plant Based Brands Inc and in June 2022 was named interim CEO.

Boosh Plant-Based Brands Inc. operates as a plant-based ready-to-eat food company. The Company offers plant-based, heat and eats family-oriented entrees and meals. Boosh Plant-Based Brands distributes its food products through retail outlets and independent grocery stores throughout Canada

Marine Heatwave-Driven Transformation of Coral Reef Ecosystems

Climate change-amplified marine heatwaves now pose an imminent threat to the world’s tropical coral reefs. On almost all coral reefs, however, climate change is superimposed on a suite of local anthropogenic stressors, and available evidence suggests that these impacted reefs can fare better than protected ones during heatwaves, leading to the ‘protection paradox’.

In this talk, we’ll journey an atoll in the central equatorial Pacific that endured heat stress of unprecedented duration during the 2015-2016 El Niño-induced 3^rd global coral bleaching event. Dr. Baum will present ecosystem-scale results of the impacts of prolonged heat stress, and discuss the role that local stressors played in modulated heat stress impacts as well as distinct mechanisms of coral resilience.
