CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements – Fall 2022 Competition

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.

Applicant eligibility: Open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. Please note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this award.

Award value: Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months

Competition Announcement: Tri-Agency CGS (CGSD) / Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral Competitions

Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D)

Applicants applying through UBC will either be:

  • currently registered in, or are on an approved leave of absence from, a degree program at UBC
  • not currently registered anywhere but was registered at any other time during the year of application (2022) in a degree program at UBC

If a student is not sure where to submit their application, they can consult the CGSD chart “Where should I submit my application?

Applications will be submitted via each of the agency platforms. The application portals are now open and applicants may begin preparing their applications.

NEW for 2022:

  • CIHR: The CIHR CGSD is now $35,000 stipend/year.  Previously, it was $30,000 stipend/year + $5,000 research allowance/year.
  • NSERC: Transcripts are now uploaded by applicants themselves directly into their NSERC online application; university staff do not upload transcripts into the online application system on behalf of applicants.  Previously, applicants selected a “university designate” staff member at UBC to upload their transcripts, but now applicants upload their own transcripts.

UBC Affiliated Fellowships – Doctoral competition

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) competition.

Students who submit an NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR doctoral award application are automatically considered for “unrestricted” Affiliated Fellowship awards and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. To be considered for “criteria-based” affiliated fellowship(s), students must submit the criteria-based checklist to their graduate program by the application deadline.

Those applying only for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered for the Affiliated Fellowships.

Core Job Responsibilities: Lead and support various engagement initiatives focused on Climate-Friendly Food Systems and intersectional areas related to UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 (CAP 2030) and emerging circular economy work managed by the UBC’s SEEDS (Social Ecological Economic Development Studies) Sustainability Program in the Sustainability & Engineering department.

The primary focus of the candidate’s role will be to:

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong background in communication, marketing, project coordination.
  • Familiarity with environmental science, food systems (GHG emissions, etc.), circular economy principles, and climate change are strong advantages.
  • Quick learner with the ability to think strategically, creatively, and out of the box.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative.
  • Strong prioritization skills and the ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently are a must.
  • The ability to work independently, while enthusiastic about challenges and change in a team environment is critical.
  • Experience in meeting facilitation and fostering multi-stakeholder relations and event organization.

Knowledge requirements include: 

  • Eligible for UBC’s Work Learn Program
  • Excellent communications skills: professional correspondence, public speaking, and presentation efficiency.
  • Expertise in creative graphic design, social media content, and storytelling techniques.
  • Ability to work well independently with little supervision.
  • Strong capability to understand previous food and climate related research proficiently in order to effectively translate and mobilize the work in various knowledge exchange activities.
