Collective Impact Projects

Some CI projects require Scholars with similar skills while some require Scholars with different skills. If you are a strong communicator and like the idea of achieving high impact through collaboration, the following projects might be for you.

How to apply

1. Attend an information session or a resume preparation workshop (optional)

We are offering two information sessions and a resume preparation workshop pertinent to recruitment for the summer 2022 program. Click here for details and to register.

2. Review the program details and the list of opportunities

Read all the information on this page and in the application guide to make sure you understand the eligibility requirements and how the program works. Details about each opportunity can be found in the links below.

3. Update your resume and cover letter

You may apply for up to three different opportunities. Please make sure your resume is up-to-date and that you customise your cover letter for each opportunity that you’re applying for. Applying to the Scholars Program is competitive so it’s worthwhile to give yourself extra time to polish your cover letter and resume.

4. Prepare your application

You will need to provide a separate resume and cover letter for each opportunity. You will also need to provide a list of references. Your cover letter, resume, and references must be saved as one PDF document, using the following naming convention: Project number_First name_Last name.pdf (e.g., 2022-072_Jenny_Smith.pdf).

British Columbia Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research (BC NEIHR)

To develop research skills and assist with student burdens related to financial, family, community and cultural responsibilities, the BC NEIHR supports Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) graduate students and postdoctoral fellows by annual competitions for Master’s and Doctoral scholarships and biennial (every two years) for Post-Doctoral fellowships.

BC NEIHR Master’s Scholarship Program

The BC NEIHR launches an annual competition for Master’s Scholarships valued at $17,500 each. Each year, recipients are invited to a Learning and Sharing Circle (with funded Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations), where they present their work and speak about their participation in this Scholarship program.

Value: $17,500 for 1 year
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Program

The BC NEIHR launches an annual competition for Doctoral Scholarships valued at $35,000 each. Each year, recipients are invited to a Learning and Sharing Circle (with funded Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations), where they present their work and speak about their participation in this Scholarship program.

Value: $35,000 (1 year)
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Renewal Program

The objective of the BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Renewal program is to continue to support the development of research skills and assist in the training of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) doctoral students enrolled in British Columbia (BC) institutions. This scholarship program is for students who: previously received a BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship; continue to demonstrate achievement in graduate studies; and show partnership potential with Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations.

Value: $35,000 (renewal of 1 year)
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Value: $59,398 per year (varying duration)
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

Aboriginal Graduate Fellowships

The University of British Columbia offers multi-year fellowships to Master’s and Doctoral Indigenous students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition, administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Approximately a dozen new fellowships are offered each year.

Each fellowship provides a stipend of $18,200 per year for Doctoral students or a stipend of $16,175 per year for Master’s students. Additionally, AGF recipients are eligible to receive tuition funding. Tuition funding will not exceed the current value of the standard Doctoral or Master’s degree tuition fees. Applicants for Master’s funding will receive fellowship funding until the end of their second year of Master’s studies; applicants for Doctoral funding will receive fellowship funding for four years or until the end of their fifth year of Doctoral studies, whichever comes first.  In all cases, continued fellowship support is conditional on satisfactory academic progress. Recipients of Master’s fellowship funding must re-apply to be considered for Doctoral funding.

All Indigenous students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. This includes Canadian First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and may include Indigenous students from Alaska and other states of the USA. The University may request further information to confirm Indigenous eligibility.

Friedman Award for Scholars in Health

The Friedman Award for Scholars in Health is open to any UBC graduate student or medical resident studying in the area of health. ‘Health’ is interpreted very broadly, and includes health promotion and disease prevention, mental health research, laboratory sciences related to medicine or health, public health, health services research, or any area intended to impact human health.  Applicants do not need to be studying in a health-related degree to be eligible to apply.

Awards of up to $50,000 each will be granted for 6 to 12 months of study outside of Western Canada.  Friedman Scholars are expected to travel to other areas of Canada and the world to seek new perspectives, learn from experts in their fields and be exposed to different cultures.  The award amount will be at the discretion of the adjudication committee.

Note regarding COVID-19: The Friedman is an award to fund travel.  In some cases, travel is not currently possible due to the ongoing pandemic.  However, applicants should approach their application with the assumption that travel will be possible in 2022/2023.
