Are you interested in in enhancing student learning experiences and fostering our faculty’s teaching community? Are you organized. efficient, and able to plan and execute events? Do you possess excellent communication skills?

LFS is looking for up to two TA Coordinators to run the LFS TA Training Program, which seeks to enhance the professional development and community of practice for Teaching Assistants of LFS courses. The position involves evaluating TA needs, coordinating workshops and Orientation, organizing community of practice opportunities for/with LFS TAs, and preparing funding applications. This position is expected to pay the GTA salary for a 96 hour contract over 12 months, to be used at the discretion of the successful candidates. Ideally, the positions will be filled by students who will be in LFS for 2 or more years, to provide continuity for the program.

The 2022 UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture is now accepting applications

Learn how to grow food with the hands-on UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture! Gain a deeper understanding of agricultural management and small-scale farming and join a network of incredible people who will support you along the way.

Practicum participants carry out seasonal farming activities with leadership provided by UBC Farm staff in the greenhouses, gardens, fields, orchards, and at our farmers’ markets. In addition, the program includes numerous guest speakers, field trips to various farming operations within the province, and access to a plot at the UBC Farm for individual and shared production.

The UBC Farm Practicum can be taken as either a six-month (April – October), or as a four-month (April – August), experiential-learning program. The program is part-time (20 hours per week), and is designed for aspiring farmers, urban gardeners, environmental educators, and students with an interest in applying their learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems.

The UBC Farm is a 24-hectare gem, the largest urban farm in Vancouver, British Columbia, and situated on a site with numerous research, educational, and community outreach activities.

Please note: To enroll in the Practicum program, you do NOT have to be a UBC student or post-secondary student; however, 6-9 academic credits are available for interested university students.

Annually, we reach out with the goal of promoting a truly practical, experiential and real-world course focused on technology entrepreneurship.

Tech Entrepreneurship (APSC541/BAEN506) has been running for over 25 years and has facilitated many entrepreneurial ventures and realized numerous successful breakout companies such as DWave, Zymeworks, Barrelwise and Recon Instruments – just to name a few.   This course pairs graduate business and APSC/STEM students to provide an experience-based introduction into the lean start-up process. It is a real-life simulation of the process that founders go through when starting a high-tech company. Students will be faced with the key issues involved in evaluating market opportunities, building a prototype, designing profitable business models, producing a solid business plan, raising capital, addressing legal considerations and developing a winning team. Students will gain the skills and tools to creatively commercialize high-tech research into profitable businesses. Teams will be expected to develop credible pitches that will be made to industry professionals.  Some of these student companies go on to participate in e@UBC, the Hatch and Creative Destruction Lab.

The core of the course runs on Wednesday evenings from January-April 2022; and there are 3 critical and mandatory preliminary classes that take place in late November/early December dedicated to team formation (Nov 18, 25 and Dec 2 – 6pm).  The course is taught by a team of business and STEM/APSC instructors for a well-rounded business and technical perspective.

The course has an application process for admission as it is very competitive with an early admission application deadline of October 15^th and a final application deadline of November 7^th .
