Upcoming Event: Vancouver Kick Off Event: Climate Solutions Research Collective September 27th

Standard

Join us for a fall kick off of the Climate Solutions Research Collective!

After engaging across both campuses for twelve months, we have heard from participants that they value the opportunity to discuss big ideas with colleagues with different perspectives and would like to see these conversations continue to grow

Modelled after the Collective’s launch in September 2023, we will be gathering in-person on September 27 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm to discuss “Big Ideas” with respect to climate solutions research.  We have gathered colleagues from across campus to provide insights on their experiences with climate solutions research and their hopes for future collaboration.  This will set the stage for facilitated discussions where each table will discuss their “Big Ideas” and potential opportunities for future research.

Presenters:

Jemima Nomunume Baada, Assistant Professor
Faculty of Arts (Geography)
Interdisciplinary climate-migration scholar, with research and teaching at the intersections of gender, climate change, migration, health and development equity.

Amanda Giang, Assistant Professor

Our next IRES Seminar is co-sponsored with IBioS:
September 12, 2024: IRES & IBioS Seminar with Dr. Lucas Alejandro Garibaldi
Optimizing Agricultural Landscapes: Enhancing Yields and Sustainability through Ecological Intensification
LocationBeaty Museum Allan Yap Theatre (Basement, 2212 Main Mall). Please check in at front desk on main floor before going downstairs.
No food or drinks allowed in the Theatre.
Time: 12:30pm to 1:20pm
Click here to register for Zoom link.

Note: Lucas will be presenting virtually and we will stream the presentation in the Beaty Museum Allan Yap Theatre.

Talk summary:

This talk will explore the role of landscape configuration and ecological intensification in optimizing agricultural productivity and sustainability, drawing insights from recent studies across Argentina’s agricultural regions. Key findings demonstrate that smaller fields, increased edge density, and proximity to natural habitats not only enhance crop yields—such as sunflower in the Pampas—but also reduce the prevalence of herbicide-resistant weeds in maize and soybean fields. These results underscore the importance of integrating ecological principles into agricultural practices to foster biodiversity, improve pollination, and control weeds naturally. By rethinking landscape design and management, we can achieve a balance between high productivity and long-term environmental health, offering practical strategies for sustainable agriculture in diverse cropping systems.

Dr. Lucas Alejandro Garibaldi, Director of the Institute for Research in Natural Resources, Agroecology, and Rural Development (IRNAD) at the National University of Río Negro, Argentina

Charting a sustainable future for oceans in Canada – Celebrating the release of OceanCanada’s Sea Change book

WEBINAR: Charting a sustainable future for oceans in Canada

Celebrating the release of Sea Change

Wednesday September 18, 2024 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Anthropogenic issues – climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution – have left visible marks on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans which border Canada. These changes will affect the ecosystems, economies, and people who live along these coasts and are a formidable challenge in building resilient and sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them.

Sea Change reports on the work of the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary, multiyear research project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s three oceans, construct scenarios of the future facing coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners in a wide array of fields investigate well-being, health, and livelihoods in coastal communities as they respond to rapid environmental and social transformation. With a focus on finding solutions, they outline the implications and obstacles for legislation, make suggestions for further research, and offer policy recommendations.

In celebration of this book’s release, some of the authors are coming together to discuss their findings and to answer the question: what can we do to chart a sustainable future for oceans in Canada?

IOF Seminar: Solving the sustainability challenges to achieve desirable ocean futures at the food-climate-biodiversity nexus

Standard
WELCOME to the 1st IOF Seminar of Academic Year 2024/5!!!!
IOF SEMINAR – September 13, 2024

Solving the sustainability challenges to achieve desirable ocean futures at the food-climate-biodiversity nexus

The ocean’s capacity to sustain life and support human wellbeing is increasingly threatened by intensifying climate change that exacerbates other non-climatic human stressors such as overfishing, pollution, and invasive species. Solutions to achieve ‘desirable’ ocean futures that support climate mitigation and adaptation, sustainable food production, and biodiversity conservation are urgently needed. Here, we examine the pathways through which portfolios of solution options could contribute to solving the challenges at the nexus of climate, food and biodiversity. We highlight how scenarios and models with participatory approaches can be used to facilitate the co-development of climate-resilient pathways for ocean futures that bring together knowledge and perspectives from stakeholders, right-holders and knowledge holders.
