The MFRE seminar this week is:  

Feb 2: Bruce Turris, Fisheries Management: How Theory Becomes Operationalized

3:30pm, MCML 160 

Bruce is an economist, but very much a practitioner. For the first 17 years of his career, he was an official with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, in the Pacific region. He subsequently went into private practice, working very closely with industry as well as government. He does extensive consulting work outside of Canada, as well as within, with examples being the US (both coasts), China and Europe.

IFSA UBC Writing Challenge: Future of Our Forests – Deadline February 14

Have you always wanted to share your research on forests with a wide audience, but haven’t gotten the right opportunity to spread the word? Well, you are in luck!

 

This writing challenge is an open call for all students to share about problems and/or solutions related to the world’s forests. Each entry must be approximately 700-1000 words long. The top THREE submissions will each receive a $150 GIFT CARD to the UBC BOOKSTORE, will be published in the IFSA Tree News and will also be invited to attend a public appreciation event co-hosted by IFSA UBC and the GLOBAL LOUNGE!

  • You can write about your research or your personal/professional experience related to forests
  • You can even write about a topic related to forests and sustainability that you feel is important and you would like to explore.   
  • The write-up should be compelling and easily understandable to a lay audience.
  • Be creative, engage the reader with a good story.
  • Don’t hesitate to include infographics, pictures, tables, charts.
