Next Friday at 1 pm, Dr. Patricia Hingston will be holding IFT College Bowl try outs in MCML 240. Sign up here!

What is College Bowl?

  • Annual food science trivia competition hosted by Institute of Food Technologists, the accrediting body for our Food Science Program at UBC
  • Teams from Food Science programs across North America compete
    • First we compete against our division (Pacific North West) and then winning division teams compete at the IFT conference in Chicago in the summer for a cash prize
  • Competition is SUPER FUN! A very encouraging atmosphere with very nice people
    • Get to know food science students and professors from other universities!
    • Tour food science facilities at the university
    • Put your food science knowledge to the test

Where/when is College Bowl?

  • This year College Bowl will take place at Washington State University in Pullman Washington
    • The exact date is not released but it’s usually the third Saturday of March  (23rd)
    • We will fly in the Friday and out the Sunday
      • NOTE: You must pay for your flight upfront and then I will reimburse you
      • I will cover hotel and taxi/uber expenses

What is involved in trying out?

  • Complete a 30 question quiz in 10 minutes
  • Top 5 ranking students make the team!
  • Can have up to 2 graduate students on the team

The Canadian Nutrition Society 2024 Thematic Conference “Advances in Research & Practice – Non-nutritive sweeteners & health: Unravelling the evidence & controversy” is just around the corner. Your CNS UBC representatives are hosting a group live-stream of the conference from 7:30am-1:30pm on January 27, 2024. A link to access recorded sessions will also be provided to registrants following the event.

How can research help inform policy priorities? Perspectives from local water, housing, and food sectors

Talk Summary:

This seminar features a panel of three speakers from local policy sectors. They will discuss current policy priorities in Vancouver and BC, research needs, and perspectives on how research can inform policy.

  Jimmy Zammar, Director of Urban Watersheds, Sewers and Drainage for the City of Vancouver

Bio:

Jimmy is the Director of Urban Watersheds, Sewers and Drainage for the City of Vancouver. He oversees the city’s rainwater and sanitary systems—the largest asset group in the City. He has led the City’s “One Water” approach, and champions the implementation of green infrastructure, water-sensitive urban planning, and embedding equity, Reconciliation and climate adaptation. As an interdisciplinary leader, Jimmy operates at the confluence of imperatives that impact the community, the environment, and the organizations that are accountable for delivery. He holds a bachelor and masters degree in Architecture, and masters degrees in project management and sustainable development.

  Jessica Woolliams, Senior Strategic Advisor, Sustainability & Resiliency · BC Housing

Bio:

Jessica has been leading efforts to mainstream and support sustainable buildings and resilient communities through policy, education, programs and training for over three decades. She championed and led the development of: UBC’s Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) program, Green Buildings BC; Harvard University’s Green Campus Initiative (Medical Campus); Light House Sustainable Building Centre; and Cascadia Green Building Council’s BC office.

She has worked with the BC Government, BC Hydro and BC Housing to develop programs and establish strategic direction for large building portfolios to become more sustainable and climate resilient. She has written numerous articles and taught at Harvard University, SFU, BCIT and UBC. Her background is building technology and urban planning.

  Jason HsiehSocial Planner on the municipal food systems portfolio

Bio:

Jason was born and raised on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-waututh, currently working as a Social Planner on the municipal food systems portfolio. The position serves to coordinate cross-departmental delivery of the Vancouver Food Strategy as well as food system related actions in the City’s more recent citywide and area plans. Jason aims to bring a community development approach to this work, looking to ground the City’s food system ambitions by building on the knowledge and assets that communities already have.

May 2024 Graduation – Application Now Open

The online graduation application for Spring 2024 has just opened for eligible students. They have until Friday, April 19, 2024 to submit their application through the SSC.  They can find the link to the application under the Graduation tab, after they’ve logged in.

Below are a few dates to note and to add into your calendars:

Application period: December 15, 2023 – April 19, 2024

Program Completion Deadline: April 19, 2024

Senate meeting:  Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Ceremony dates:  May 22-24, 27-30

Students will be assigned to their ceremonies in March, based on their degree and primary specialization (if applicable).  The schedule for the ceremonies is not available, at this time, but will be posted as soon as its been finalized.  Please visit the Graduation at UBC website for updates.
